Sunday September 6, 1998Florida Soccer Defeats No. 20 Southern Methodist
The Gators had a new experience of this young season Sunday evening playing from behind. The Lady Mustangs Laura Snyder found the back of the net on SMUs first shot of the night at the seven minutes mark. Florida senior Katie Tullis knotted the match at 32:41 with a right-side shot off a cross from Fotopoulos. The two teams were scoreless in the second half, forcing the match to sudden death.
Fotopoulos, who scored the game-winning goal at 94:46 in Fridays 1-0 sudden-death win over No. 11 Texas A&M, once again got the win for the Gators in the overtime period. At the exact same time that she hit the winning goal against Texas A&M, Fotopoulos struck again, getting the 12-yard winner from the center of the goal. Fotopoulos played for SMU as a freshman and sophomore, including the Lady Mustangs 1995 NCAA Final Four team, before transferring to Florida for the 1996 season.
"It was emotional, coming back and playing where I used to play before," Fotopoulos said. "Tonight, I was playing against people that I used to know. I knew it would be a tough match for our team and for me individually, but I think our team did really well and SMU was awesome. It was a good match.
"I was just trying to get off quick shots during the game, but at the end, I just put that extra touch and tried to place it in and luckily it went in."
Next up, the Gators play host to Tennessee on Friday, Sept. 11 for UFs first home match of the season. Match time is set for 8 p.m. at the Percy Beard Stadium and admission is free.
