Sophomore Camilo Villegas won medalist honors for the second time of the 2002 season Tuesday.

The No. 5 ranked University of Florida men's golf team won its fourth consecutive Mercede-Benz Collegiate Championship Tuesday at the Sawgrass Country Club (Par 72 - 6,895 yards) hosted by North Florida. It is the second win for the Gators this year.

The Gators held off an impressive surge by seventh-ranked Tennessee, which started the day tied for fourth place 12 strokes behind Florida, to finish in second place with a final round 277 (-11) for a two-day total of 874 (+10). Host North Florida, ranked No. 32, had a final round 293 to finish third among the 15-team field at 884 (+10).

Florida sophomore Camilo Villegas (Mendellin, Colombia), the nation's third-ranked player in the latest Golfweek/Sagarin collegiate rankings, won medalist honors out of a field of 78 players by carding a final round 73 to finish at 6-under-par 210. Vanderbilt's Brandt Snedeker shot a final round 69 and North Carolina State's Garth Mulroy carded a 70 as both finished at 4-under 212 to tie for second place.

Second-ranked Wake Forest placed fourth, shooting 290 to finish at 887 (+23). North Carolina State, ranked No. 36, was fifth at 890 (+26), No. 24 Augusta State placed sixth at 891 (+27), LSU was seventh at 892 (+28), No. 6 Texas placed eighth at 894 (+30), North Carolina was ninth at 896 (+32), Duke was 10th at 902 (+32), Florida State was 11th at 903 (+39), Vanderbilt was 12th at 904 (+40), Georgia State was 13th at 908 (+44), No. 17 South Carolina placed 14th at 911 (+47) and Northwestern rounded out the field at 915 (+51) to place 15th.

The Gators scored two other top-10 places. Senior Camilo Benedetti (Mendellin, Colombia) jumped from a tie at 14th to finish T6 after carding a final-round 68 for a 216 total. Junior transfer Ari Savolainen (Helsinki, Finland) tied for 10th, shooting 76-70-72--218. American Express Financial Advisors also sponsored the tournament.

UF will make a tip to the islands for their next tournament at the Puerto Rico Classic in San Juan, Puerto Rico at the Rio Mar Country Club. The tournament will run from February 24-26.
