Gainesville, FL

The No. 5 University of Florida women’s soccer team defeated No. 20 Hartford (3-3) 5-2 Saturday afternoon in front of a Percy Beard Stadium crowd of 749. The Gators (6-0, 2-0) are off to their best start ever with their sixth consecutive win.

Junior Sarah Yohe and senior All-American Danielle Fotopoulos netted two goals apiece and freshman Abby Wambach had one goal for Florida. Yohe scored first for the Gators at 21:58 off a 10-yard shot, then Fotopoulos struck again for the Gators at 27:57 from nine-yards out. Hartford’s Maria Kun cut the score to 2-1 at halftime, scoring from six-yards out at 40:49 off an UF turnover. Most of the first half of play was contested under heavy showers that cleared by the beginning of the second half.

The Gators scored quickly to open the second half, with Yohe finding the net from eight-yards out off an errant pass. Just 15 seconds later, Wambach struck again for the Gators, hitting a nine-yard volley off a cross from freshman Keisha Bell. Fotopoulos finished the UF scoring at 53:12 with a nine-yard shot off the assist from senior Melissa Pini and freshman Karyn Hall. Kun hit the match’s final goal from 10 yards at 66:55 off an assist from Sonja Fuss.

Florida goalkeeper Lynn Pattishall, making her first start of the 1998 season, recorded five saves. Tina Cederkvist started in goal for the Hawks and recorded three saves. Ingrid Sternhoff played the second half for UH and had five saves for the Hawks.

Next, Florida travels to Nashville, Tenn., to play No. 16 Vanderbilt on Sept. 25 at 8 p.m. The match will be aired live on Sunshine.
