Amanda Moore picked up two wins for the Gators in the opening day of the UF Hotel Invitational.

Gainesville, Fla- The Florida softball team finished day one of the University of Florida Hotel and Conference Center Invitational 2-0, defeating UT-Chattanooga 7-6 in their first game and Hofstra 4-2 at Florida Softball Stadium Friday. Florida improves to 5-4 on the season.

Amanda Moore (3-2) pitched a complete game against Hofstra earning the win.

"It was a big win for us as a team and for Amanda," Florida coach Karen Johns said following the win against Hofstra. "I just wanted her to get that win and she did. We all stepped up."

The Gators' Moore allowed only five hits over her seven innings to help Florida over the .500 mark for the first time this season.

Designated player Bree Berger led the Gators against Hofstra, going 2-for-3 with 2 RBI's. Right fielder Mylin Prieto finished 2-for-2 for the Gators and added a RBI.

In game two against Hofstra, Florida fell behind early 2-0 after giving up a run in the second and third inning. An error by Florida right fielder Mylin Prieto brought home Hailey Clark in the second, and Amanda Halloway was brought home from third base in the third inning on Danielle Stewart's foul-out to second base.

Florida launched a scoring assault of their own an inning later, scoring two runs in the fourth inning. Nikki Brown scored Florida's first run on an error by Hofstra's shortstop, and Mylin Prieto knocked in Jenn Brown on her RBI single to left field with two outs.

The Gators scored two more runs in the fifth to conclude their scoring for the night. With Bree Berger inserted as a designated player with runners on second and third, Berger singled through the left side of the infield on a 2-1 pitch with two outs to score both runners.

In game one, Florida, as the visiting team, opened up the top of the first. Freshman Mandy Schuerman led off the game with a double down the left field line. Jackie Marchetta reached on an error by the Lady Mocs first baseman and Schuerman scored. Berger reached on a fielder's choice and Marchetta was safe on the attempt to throw her out at second. Both Florida base runners advanced on a Jenn Mossadeghi sacrifice bunt. Marchetta then scored on a RBI single by Prissie Walden. Walden got all the way to third and Berger scored on an error by the catcher. Nikki Baldwin got the final RBI of the inning as she scored Walden on a sacrifice fly to left field.

The Gators seemed to have a comfortable 4-0 lead, but the Lady Mocs turned on some heat of their own in the bottom of the inning. They batted through their lineup and scored four runs on five hits and one Gator error. After starter Brittani Houghton gave up two runs on three hits with only one out, sophomore reliever Amanda Moore came into the game for Florida.

Florida came up to bat in the top of the second in a 4-4 tie. Mossadeghi broke the tie as she scored Schuerman with a RBI single. The Gators added another run in the top of the third to give them the 6-4 lead.

Amanda Knowles replaced Moore in the bottom of the third. Both teams were held scoreless through the fourth and fifth innings. Chattanooga narrowed the gap in the sixth inning. Teri Herbert scored on a double by Jill Crawford.

Both teams added runs in the seventh to end the game with a 7-6 win for the Gators. Moore was credited with the win and Knowles got the first save of her career. Awbrey Winkler had the loss for the Lady Mocs.

Washington won both of their games earlier today. They defeated UT-Chattanooga 9-1 and Hofstra 6-0.

Florida will play Washington tomorrow at 1:30 p.m. tomorrow. The winner of that game will be the top seed and play the loser of the early game between UT-Chattanooga and Hofstra at 4 p.m. The losing team will be the number two seed and will face the winner of the early game at 6:30 p.m.
