Friday March 19, 1999Gators Slip to Gonzaga in NCAA Sweet 16

Gonzaga edged the Gators to advance into the West Region final against No. 1 seed Connecticut...The Bulldogs’ Casey Calvary provided the game-winning point, leaping over UF’s Brent Wright and tipping in a missed shot with 4.4 seconds left...The tight contest featured 14 ties or lead changes in the second half...Florida had one last chance, but Eddie Shannon’s desperation three-pointer at the buzzer was long...The Gators managed to keep the game close despite shooting 25 percent from behind the arc (6-of-24)...In the first half, Gonzaga built its biggest advantage, 26-13, before Florida stormed back to tie it at 27 with 3:11 left before intermission...The Gators finished the season with the fourth best win total (22) in school history and were just the sixth UF team to win 20 games...The 22 wins for Billy Donovan were the most wins by a Florida coach in his third year with the program...The Gators concluded the season as the second most improved team in the SEC, with an eight-win improvement over the 1997-98 campaign...Florida finished the year ranked 23rd in the AP Poll, becoming only the second UF team (1993-94 squad) to be ranked in the final AP...Five Gators, Mike Miller, Kenyan Weaks, Teddy Dupay, Greg Stolt and Udonis Haslem,  finished the season averaging double-figure points for the first time since the 1989-90 team and only the fourth time in school history...Florida outrebounded the opposition in 17 of 31 games this season, and were the first Gator team to hold a positive rebounding margin since the 1994-95 season.
