Janelle Atkinson recorded wins in two events Saturday in Florida's defeat of Alabama

Florida's Janelle Atkinson (Jamaica) and Carlos Jayme (Goais, Brazil) each won two events and diver Zach Wilcox (Yarrow Point, Wash.) won the one-meter men's diving event as the Gators rolled past Southeastern Conference foe Alabama Crimson Tide Saturday at the Stephen C. O'Connell Center. The No. 8 Florida women's team (10-2, 5-1) notched a 129-99 win while the No. 14 Gator men's team (9-3, 4-2) won 128.50-105.50.

Florida won the first four events on the women's side, including an NCAA B time of 3:46.11 in the 400-yard medley relay. In the 200-yard freestyle, both Jaime Ellis (Spring, Texas) and Chantal Gibney (Dublin, Ireland) recorded NCAA B times en route to Florida's sweep of the top three spots in that event. Atkinson won the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 51.20, beating out Alabama's Irini Kosta by a full second. Overall, the women's team won seven events and had five NCAA B standard times.

In the women's one-meter diving, Sarah Close (Clearwater, Fla.) finished second with 263.70 points behind Alabama's Lane Bassham. Gator Kristen Connor (Gainesville, Fla.) finished fourth with 222.07 points. Close also finished second in the women's three-meter with 291.60 points while Connor placed third with 276.82 points.

On the men's side, Jayme took first place in both the 100-yard and 200-yard freestyle, clocking in at an NCAA B standard 44.37 and 1:39.48, respectively. Jim Kostowicz (Longwood, Fla.) won the 50-yard freestyle in a time of 20.93, just .03 faster than teammate Hendrik Odendaal (Stellenbosch, South Africa). Other top individual times included Duncan Sherrard's 1:51.42 in the 200-yard individual medley and Mike Jansen's 1:48.78 in the 200-yard backstroke.

Wilcox scored 315.89 points to win the one-meter diving event and finish 10 points ahead of Alabama's Bira Barbosa. Reggie Coote (Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.) finished in fourth place in that event with 275.09 points. In the three-meter, Wilcox scored 326.02 points and Coote scored 271.80 points as exhibition divers.

Florida returns to action Saturday, Feb. 2, when the Gators travel to Knoxville, Tenn. to take on the Tennessee Volunteers at 1 p.m. EST.
