Saturday December 1, 2001Gator Swimmer Sets Another U.S. Open Record

The University of Florida's Janelle Atkinson (Jamaica) set a meet record Saturday in the 800-meter freestyle with her time of 8:20.13 during the final day of U.S. Open. This is the second meet record for Atkinson, who set the mark in the 400-meter freestyle on Thursday.

In other women's competition, Meredith Green (Chapel Hill, N.C.) finished third in the 800-meter freestyle (8:32.79), while Sara McLarty (DeLand, Fla.) finished sixth in the same event, touching the wall in 8:34.80). In the 200-meter butterfly, Rebecca Harper (Richmond, Va.) finished third with her time of 2:11.97, and McLarty and Cara Teague (Sugarland, Texas) finished 11th and 22nd, respetivley, in the same event. In relay action, Florida's team "A" (Maureen Farrell, Chantal Gibney, Leah Martindale and Atkinson) finished in fourth place (3:46.89), and the Gators' team "B" (Diane Tennison, Anna Chapman, Rebekah Olsen, Green) placed 11th with a tiem of 3:52.83.

For the men, Carlos Jayme (Goias, Brazil), finished fifth in the 100-meter freestyle, clocking in at 50.29, while Hendrik Odendaal (Stellenbosch, South Africa) finished 18th in the same race, turning in a time of 51.04. In the 200-meter breaststroke, Ian Chadsey (Reston, Va.) finished fifth (2:16.29), and Pohilip Norris (Longwood, Fla.) and Ansel Tjin-A-Tam (Paramaribo, Suriname) finished 20th and 21st in the same event. The Florida "A" team of Jayme, Odendaal, Scott Schultz and Adam Sioui placed second in the 400-meter freestyle relay with a time of 3:22.70, while the Florida "B" team (Kris Wiebeck, Claudio Ulrich, Chris Kellam, Ricardo Molari) finished 16th, clocking in at 3:31.55.

These events conclude the Gators' fall competition. Florida returns to action Jan. 5 when they host Penn State at 1 p.m. in the Stephen C. O'Connell Center.
