The University of Florida men's and women's swimming and diving teams opened competition Thursday with four UF divers traveling to Fayetteville, Ark., for the University of Arkansas Invitational while members of the swimming teams went to Long Island, N.Y., for the U.S. Open.

At the U.S. Open, Janelle Atkinson (Jamaica) set a meet record with her time of 4:05.39 in the 400-meter freestyle event, breaking Brooke Bennett's previous record of 4:05.67. Meredith Green (Chapel Hill, N.C.) also finished in the top ten in that event, finishing seventh with a time of 4:14.95. In other individual competition, Sara McLarty (DeLand, Fla.) finished 12th in the 400-meter freestyle (4:12.77) and 19th in the 200-meter individual medley (2:18.04) and Leah Martindale (St. James, Barbados) finished in 12th place in the 50-meter freestyle with a time of 26.33 (26.28p).

For the men, Eric Donnelly (Sarasota, Fla.) finished 14th in the 200-meter individual medley, touching the wall in 2:05.66, and Carlos Jayme (Goias, Brazil) finished 6th in the 50-meter freestyle with a time of 22.91.

In relay action, the Florida women's "A" team, comprised of Atkinson, Diane Tennison, Green and Chantal Gibney, finished second in the 800-meter freestyle relay with a time of 8:09.68, while Adam Sioui, Kris Wiebeck, Jayme and Donnelly made up the Florida men's "A" team that finished fifth in the men's 800-meter freestyle relay, touching the wall in 7:35.70.

In Fayetteville, Ark., Florida divers began competition in Day One of the University of Arkansas Invitational. In men's three-meter diving, Zach Wilcox (Yarrow Point, Wash.) finished second with 521 points, while Reggie Coote (Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.) finished fourth with 424.30 points.

Both events in which the Gators are participating continue Friday.
