Thursday November 29, 2001Gator Volleyball Advances to Second Round of NCAA
The seventh ranked Florida volleyball team opened play in the 2001 NCAA Championships tonight with a 3-0 (30-20, 30-13, 30-22) win over Florida A&M. The Gators will face Florida International in the tournament’s second round Friday at 7 p.m. at the Stephen C. O’Connell Center.
Nicole McCray led the Gators in kills with 13 kills and a season high eight block assists. She hit an effective .500 clip in the three games. Benavia Jenkins had 12 kills, her third-straight double-digit kill match and hit .667. Jenkins also contributed four block assists. Aury Cruz was the third Gator in double figures, posting 10 kills. UF had 14 blocks to FAMU’s lone block and had 15 more kills that the Rattlerettes.
Florida hit .429 in the first game of the match thanks to Jenkins’ four kills on four attempts. UF posted five blocks in the first game alone and rolled to the 30-20 win. Two other players joined Jenkins with at least four kills in the game. Florida A&M hung tough early, trailing only 18-16 before UF went on a 7-1 run to put the game out of reach.
McCray had six kills as well as three block assists in the second game. FAMU hung with the Gators early again, but could never take a lead on the Gators. With the score12-8, The Gators ended the gameon an 18-5 run and headed into the break with a 2-0 cushion.
After the intermission, UF came out of the lockerroom and won game three with ease. Jenkins had seven kills in the clinching game and hit .750 in the stanza.
UF plays Florida International in tomorrow’s second round. FIU defeated Central Florida in three games in the evening’s first match. Tomorrow’s match time is 7 p.m. All UF students are admitted free with their student ID.
