Sunday September 30, 2001Men's Golf Ties for Sixth at Ohio State

The No. 1 ranked Florida Gators dropped to finish sixth at the Ping/Golfweek Invitational hosted at The Ohio State Scarlet Sunday. UF rallied into second after finishing day one at T8, but again struggled in round three to finish at 20-over 872.

Roaring out of the gate in his first-ever tournament with the Gators, junior Ari Savolainen (Helsinki, Finland) led the scoring, finishing tied for sixth. Savolainen set a Scarlet Course record (championship tees) Saturday with a 5-under par 66, finishing with a total 213 (E).

Following Savolainen, 2001 U.S. Amateur Champion Bubba Dickerson (Hilliard, Fla.) claimed 12th. Dickerson jumped 9 spots after finishing round one tied for 21st. In a continuous move up the field, sophomore Camilo Villegas (Mendellin, Colombia) tied for 26th, shooting 7-over 220.

Slipping slightly, senior Camilo Benedetti (Mendellin, Colombia) concluded the tournament at T43 shooting 11-over 224. Rounding out the Gator's lineup was junior Jordan Code (Tampa, Fla.) who finished at 72nd with a total of 237.

Clemson won the tournament championship by one stroke over Wake Forest. Clemson's D.J. Trahan, playing in the final group of the day, birdied No. 18 to give the Tigers the victory. Brent Wanner of Wake Forest was the tournament medallist with a three-round score of 210 (69-70-71=210).

The Gators will now get ready to travel to Dalton, Ga. where they will compete at the Carpet Capital Collegiate hosted by Georgia Tech. The 54-hole tournament runs from Oct. 5-7 and will be held at The Farm.
