Friday September 7, 2001UF Soccer Opens SEC Season with 3-0 Win at LSU

BATON ROUGE, La.

Kelley Visentin, making her first start for the Gators, scored twice Friday at LSU.

The No. 20 University of Florida soccer team (2-1, 1-0 SEC) opened its Southeastern Conference season with a 3-0 win over Louisiana State (1-1, 0-1 SEC) in front of a LSU Soccer Complex crowd of 480. The win extends the Gators’ league win streak to 46 consecutive wins – the longest current conference win streak in the nation.

Sophomore Kelley Visentin, making her first start for the Gators on Friday, gave UF a 1-0 lead just before halftime. She put in a deflection off LSU goalkeeper Bonnie Otillio at 44:08 from six-yards. Visentin also scored the Gators’ second goal, one-touching the ball from sophomore Robin Fulton for an eight-yard shot to the middle of the net. Senior Andi Sellers finished off the Gators’ scoring for the evening, hitting a seven-yard shot down the center at 79:27 off the assist from freshman Christine Johnson.

The Gators were without the services of 2000 SEC Player of the Year Abby Wambach and sophomore forward Crystal Frimpong Friday evening. Wambach is in Chicago at an U.S. National Team camp for the 2001 Nike U.S. Women’s Cup and Frimpong was sidelined with a concussion suffered in Sunday’s match vs. Stanford.

"It’s a good way to start off the SEC season," UF Head Coach Becky Burleigh said. "We are happy to get the shutout. It was a great confidence builder for our team that was playing without two of our starting forwards. Kellye did a great job finishing those two goals."

The Gators return to Gainesville to play host to Miami on Sunday, Sept. 9. Match time is set for 2 p.m. at the Percy Beard Stadium and admission is free.
