Thursday May 31, 2001Men's Golf 2nd After NCAA Championship Day 2

DURHAM, N.C.

The University of Florida men's golf team jumped from 13th to second place after the second round of the NCAA Championships Thursday at the Duke University Golf Club (Par 72, 7,088 yards) and will compete in the finals Friday and Saturday.

The Gators shot a 278 (-10) for a second round total 574 (-2) to make up 11 strokes and come in five shots behind leader Arizona. The Wildcats are first with a team 569 (-5).

"I was disappointed after yesterday," Coach Buddy Alexander said. "Iím not saying today was typical either but it was more typical than yesterday. I think somewhere in between is perfectly typical. I knew this team was better than we played yesterday. After yesterday I had confidence that they would respond today, and they did. Iím proud of them."

Senior Nick Gilliam (Gainesville, Fla./Gainesville) continues to lead the charge for the second day. Gilliam is sixth overall with a two-day total 139 (-5). Three Gators are tied for 28th. Junior Camilo Benedetti (Medellin, Colombia/Instituto Jorge Robledo) improved 17 spots after shooting a 71 (-1) for a total 145 (+1). Sophomore Bubba Dickerson (Hilliard, Fla./West Nassau) was 4-under-par 68 in his second day. Freshman Camilo Villegas (Medellin, Colombia/The Columbus School) rebounded from a 96th-place finish with a 3-under-par 69. Ben Banks (England, UK/King Edwards School) rounds out the UF squad in 130th place. The junior equaled Wednesday's 77 (+5) for a two-day score of 154 (+10).

Only the top 15 teams and nine individuals not on those squads advanced to the finals. UF will tee of Friday at 9 a.m.
