Friday May 25, 2001Baseball Defeats Stetson 10-9 in NCAA Regional
Jason Dill and Peter Nystrom combined for five RBI as Florida broke open a 5-5 tie with five runs over two innings and the Gators held off a late rally to defeat Stetson 10-9 Friday in NCAA Baseball Regional action at Mark Light Stadium.
With the win, Florida (35-25) advances to play the winner of the Miami/Bucknell matchup Saturday at 3:30 p.m. Miami and Bucknell’s contest began at 7 p.m. Stetson plays the loser at noon Saturday.
With the contest tied at 5-5 in the fifth inning, Florida scored five runs over the next two innings to take a 10-5 lead. UF grabbed a 6-5 lead in the fifth when Kevin Estrada’s sacrifice fly scored Aaron Sobieraj from third. The Gators opened the game up with four runs in the sixth when Matt Goss led off with a double followed by a Jason Dill single and Peter Nystrom sacrifice fly which scored Goss. After an out, Pat Osborn drove Dill home on a single down the leftfield line and Aaron Sobieraj (single) and Brian Rose (double) both followed with RBI hits to give UF a commanding 10-5 lead.
Stetson rallied back to within 10-9 in the eighth inning, scoring four runs on an error and three on Frank Corr’s three-run home run to leftfield. That was as close as the Hatters came as UF reliever Keith Ramsey registered the final three outs in the ninth.
Florida reliever Jay Belflower (5-3) earned the victory after pitching 2.2 innings. He retired a career-high eight consecutive batters and held Stetson hitless and struck out two batters. Ramsey pitched the final 2.0 innings and struck out five to close out the game.
Florida went up 4-2 with a three-run third inning. Matt Goss led off with a walk, stole second then scored on Jason Dill’s single to centerfield. Peter Nystrom drove Dill home on a double, Nysrom advanced to third on a throwing error and scored on Aaron Davidson’s ground ball error.
Florida went up 5-2 in the fourth when it loaded the bases on a Kevin Estrada hit by pitch, Mark Kiger infield single and Matt Goss walk. After Goss was ruled out when Jason Dill’s single hit him on a runner’s interference play, Peter Nystrom drove in a run on a walk with the bases loaded.
But Stetson was not finished as the Hatters rallied to tie at 5-5 with a three-run fifth. Frank Corr singled and scored on Bryan Zenchyk’s two-run home run. Brian Snyder was hit by pitch, Andy Wilson followed with a single and Snyder scored on Ian Church’s RBI single. After Church’s single, UF starter Jimmy Ramshaw (4.2 innings) was replaced by Belflower, who registered the final two outs of the inning.
Jason Dill led Florida at the plate with a career-high tying 4-5 performance. He drove in two runs and scored two runs. Peter Nystrom drove in three runs and went 1-2 with a run scored and bases loaded walk. Matt Goss scored a career-high tying three runs and 1-3 with two walks, Kevin Estrada went 1-3 with two RBI and Aaron Sobieraj finished 2-5 with two runs and a RBI.
Stetson was led by Corr’s 3-5, three RBI, two runs scored day. Reliever Jack Collins suffered the loss after pitching 4.2 innings and allowing six hits, five runs.
*Jason Dill tied a career-high with four hits. He has now registered four hits three times in his career. Dill hit his 40th career double in the first inning. Only 13 players in UF history have hit 40+ doubles.
*Jay Belflower retired a career-high eight consecutive batters from the fifth to the seventh innings. In Belflower’s last eight outings, he has a 1.76 ERA in 15.1 innings pitched and has allowed 10 hits, seven runs (three earned), six walks and has struck out eight batters.
