TALLAHASSEE

Jackie Marchetta was 3-for-3 and scored twice vs. UConn.

All nine batters recorded a hit as the No. 4 Seed Gator softball team eliminated #5 UConn from the NCAA Region 8 tournament with an 8-0, five-inning victory Friday afternoon at the Florida State Softball Complex to advance to play top seed Florida State Friday night at 8 p.m.

UF (37-27) recorded the most runs ever in its NCAA history and scattered 13 hits, the most since March 17. Freshman Amanda Moore (Tuscaloosa, Ala./Hillcrest) allowed six hits in five innings for her sixth shutout. Moore improved to 14-10. UConn (36-23) went through three pitchers. Starter Barb Cook (19-12) took the loss. Cook lasted four innings and allowed five runs on eight hits, and fanned one.

After both sides went down in order in the first, UConn threatened with runners in scoring position after two hits and a fielder's choice. The Huskies left runners at third again in the third and fifth frames, but UF's flawless defense was behind Moore. Freshman right fielder Jenilee Garner (Gainesville, Fla./Gainesville) dove for a shallow fly ball and turned a double play, picking off the runner at first base to get the Gators out of the latter jam.

"Amanda did a good job after the second inning," Coach Karen Johns said. "She was up in the zone a bit early, but she made the adjustment. And our bats, we've been struggling lately. I think we unpacked them today. We executed, and I'm happy with the whole team effort."

The Gators did all they needed in the last two innings. UF scored three times in the fourth on four hits and an error. Freshman left fielder Mylin Prieto (Cooper City, Fla./St. Thomas Aquinas) drove in two of those runs with her first career triple to left center. Center fielder Amanda Judd (Cornville, Ariz./Mingus Union) followed with a base hit for the third RBI.

UF batted through the order in the fifth, recording seven hits. Designated player Bree Berger (Carmel, Ind./Carmel) led off with a single, the first of five consecutive hits. Pinch runner Stacy Rosen (Ft. Lauderdale, Fla./Piper) advanced on first baseman Ashley Boone's (Irvine, Calif./Woodbridge) 20th double this year. Junior Caryn Haskins came in relief, and her first pitch was wild, allowing Rosen to score. Garner singled to score Boone.

Up 5-0, third baseman Jenn Mossadeghi (Jupiter, Fla./The King's Academy) came in on Haskins' second wild pitch. Marchetta stole home for the seventh run. Prieto drew a one-out walk, and senior catcher Emily Marino (Joliet, Ill./Joliet Catholic) plated her on a single down the left field line for the game-winning run.

Marchetta tied a career-best in hits, going 3-for-3 with two runs. Judd and Garner who had not been regulars in the lineup since April 4, each went 2-for-3. Second baseman Prissie Walden (Jacksonville, Fla./First Coast) stole a career-high two bases, but was stranded both times.
