Thursday May 10, 2001Softball Loses 1-0 to Miss. State in SEC Tourney
It was the third meeting between Florida and Mississippi State in the Southeastern Conference Softball Tournament Thursday night at the Jim Frost Stadium, and for the third time, the Bulldogs defeated the Gators 1-0.
UF (36-25) managed just one hit vs. the Bulldog pitching staff. MSU (35-24) recorded three hits off of UF's Amanda Moore (Tuscaloosa, Ala./Hillcrest).
"Their pitching staff held us down," Coach Karen Johns said. "I'm proud of our effort. We had good at-bats, we just didn't get the hit when we needed it. They had that one big hit. I thought we did a good job defensively and pitching."
Moore (13-9) struck out four and allowed one run on three hits over six innings. The freshman pitched a no-hitter through three and two-thirds. UF was errorless, while MSU blundered twice. The Gators, though, stranded four runners, including the tying run on second in the top of the seventh. Bulldog reliever Kellie Wilkerson struck out the last two Gators for her 10th save over one and a third. Starter Jennifer Pursell gave up one hit and two walks, and struck out three in five and two-thirds scoreless innings.
Second-team All-SEC selection Ashley Boone (Irvine, Calif./Woodbridge) recorded UF's hit.
MSU scored in the fifth when first baseman Cheri Smith led off with a walk. Smith was sacrificed to second and came in on second baseman Brooke Best's single through the middle.
UF will play the loser of the LSU-Auburn game Friday at 2 p.m. WRUF-AM 850 will broadcast the game live.
