– In Florida's last regular-season game, the Tennessee Lady Volunteers defeated the Gators in the Southeastern Conference softball three-game series finale 6-3 in front of 544 fans Sunday afternoon at the Florida Softball Stadium.
The Gators concluded their 2001 regular season at 36-24 in all games and 14-15 in the SEC. The Volunteers improved to 23-33 in all games and 8-18 in the SEC. The win broke UT’s 10-game losing streak in Gainesville.
UF shut out UT 3-0 and 7-0 in Saturday's doubleheader. "We did not have the same approach we did yesterday," Coach Karen Johns said. "I'm disappointed in our pitching. But, give (Tennessee) credit. They played hard. They're playing for a spot in the tournament."
Before the game, the seniors, Ashley Boone (Irvine, Calif./Woodbridge), Renise Landry (West Monroe, La./West Monroe) and Emily Marino (Joliet, Ill./Joliet Catholic), were honored for their four years of hard work and contributions to the UF softball team.
The Lady Vols' scoring began with a UF error in the third. Mollet, who walked, scored on a dropped popup at second base from designated player Leigh Ann Ellis. First baseman Hannah Low belted a three-run homer out of left field for a 4-0 lead
The Gators scored once in three different innings. In the third inning, a two-base error allowed UF's first run. Center fielder Maura Mollet dropped a fly ball from Mylin Prieto (Cooper City, Fla./St. Thomas Aquinas) that sent Stacy Rosen (Ft. Lauderdale/Piper) home. Rosen reached on a single to right field and advanced on a ground-out by Jackie Marchetta (Boynton Beach, Fla./Santaluces Community/Fla. Southern College).
Boone doubled down the right field line and scored in the fourth. After Katy Berger (Carmel, Ind./Carmel/Fresno State) had hit a fly out and her sister, Bree Berger (Carmel, Ind./Carmel), was hit by a pitch, Marino stepped up to the plate and hit a single RBI to center field that sent Boone home to bring UF within two.
But, UT maintained its momentum and scored twice in the sixth. Carissa Roustan homered to left field, and two consecutive doubles made it 6-2.
UF attempted a two-out rally in the seventh inning. Freshman Jenilee Garner (Gainesville, Fla./Gainesville), who came in for Prieto in the in the fifth inning, doubled to center field. Jenn Mossadeghi (Jupiter, Fla./The King’s Academy) hit a single to score Garner.
Landry (19-14) received the loss after going four and one-third innings with two strikeouts and four walks. Landry allowed four unearned runs on five hits. Moore came in relief in the fifth inning and struck out one, but accounted for two earned runs on three hits and a walk
