Florida’s Peter Nystrom hit for the cycle as the Gators defeated the Canadian National Junior Team 23-5 Tuesday night in an exhibition game.
Florida broke the game open with a 10 run fourth inning. Kevin Estrada hit a grand slam and Nystrom and David Klebonis each hit three-run homers. Nystrom finished the game 4 for 6 with six RBI and three runs.
Florida starter Jay Belflower earned the victory pitching three innings. Belflower gave up one run on four hits. Canada’s second pitcher Sean Grimes took the loss going 1.1 innings giving up 10 runs.
Florida scored three runs in the fifth inning. Mark Kiger led off the inning with a solo homer, the Gators fourth of the evening.
Florida used six pitchers in the game. Jay Hollenkamp, T.J. Stanton and Matt Bomeisl each pitched one inning of scoreless relief to finish the game.
The Canadian Junior National Team is staying in Orlando for training at the Disney Sports Complex. They will also be playing on their trip south the Univ. of Central Florida, and single A teams of the Atlanta Braves, Cleveland Indians, and Kansas City Royals.
Florida returns to action this weekend against SEC-West foe Mississippi State. Game times are Friday 7:00 p.m., Saturday 7:00 p.m. and Sunday 1:30 p.m. Saturday’s game can be seen on Sunshine Network (check local listings). All games can be heard on the Gator Radio Network.
