GAINESVILLE, Fla. -- Josh Comiter answered his phone Monday night and after an exchange of greetings got the perfunctory “How are you?” question.

His answer: “It’s only the greatest day of my life.”

Josh with Dad Hours earlier, Comiter got a call from the University Athletic Association to inform him that he’d been chosen as the first honorary “Mr. Two Bits” selected from the student body. The 21-year-old senior business major’s video pitch to do the traditional pre-game cheer was deemed the best among entries received by the UAA, according to the three judges: Athletic Director Jeremy Foley, student body president Cory Yeffet and former Gators star tailback Errict Rhett, the original honorary Mr. Two Bits.

Comiter, the latest in a long family line of Gators, will perform his rendition of the cheer made famous by George Edmondson on Saturday when UF faces Eastern Michigan at The Swamp.

“Both my mom and dad went to Florida. My brothers went to Florida,” said Josh, who provided the photo (right) of a 2002 game against Kentucky he attended with his father. “I’ve been going to Gator games all my life. I was at the 1996 national championship [game against Florida State].”

The ’96 national championship game?

“Yeah,” he said. “I was two.”

Comiter family Indeed, parents Richard and Marilyn Comiter attended UF, with the former a current member of the Board of Trustees at the Levin College of Law. Brothers Andrew and Matt attended UF, with the former the only three-time president of Florida Blue Key. That's the family to the right. And Josh's brothers both married Florida grads.

See where this is going?

“We even have a room in our house we call ‘The Swamp,’ ” Comiter said.

When the Mr. Two Bits student competition was announced Aug. 27, Comiter didn’t waste any time. The rules required each entry to make a video explaining why they’d make a good Mr. Two Bits.

So Comiter got into costume (and into character), showed up at a freshman orientation and asked the newest Gators to help him out. When he showed Matt the footage, his brother suggested doing the same thing at some other venues.

“I just walked up to places and people would say, ‘Hey, you’re Two Bits!’ ” said Comiter, who popped into The Rally, the Southwest Rec Center and a few other spots and gathered his troops. “The all were great about helping me.”

And he pulled it off.

“Josh paid tribute to this tradition by involving students from all over the campus,” said Alicia Longworth, assistant athletics director for marketing and promotions. “Most importantly, he showed a passion that will do justice and honor George Edmondson.”

Now, he’ll get to do it for real Saturday. Comiter will be the first Mr. Two Bits to perform this season after Lito Sheppard, the former UF All-America defensive back, was washed out last weekend, along with the scheduled 2014 season opener against Idaho.

“It won't rain for this game, no way," Comiter said. "I’m thinking nothing but positive thoughts."

Of course, he is. After all, it figures to be the next greatest day of his life.
