Annie Speese celebrates her goal with Lauren Smith (No. 6). Florida finished exhibition play with a 2-0 win over Baylor.

GAINESVILLE, Fla. – A pair of goals in the opening 24 minutes gave the University of Florida soccer team a 2-0 win over Baylor Saturday evening at the James G. Pressly Stadium.

The Gator scoring started in the 16th minute when Pamela Begić put in the diagonal ball through the box from junior All-American Christen Westphal. Senior Annie Speese’s score six minutes later off the ball from junior Lauren Smith gave the Gators the final margin.

Saturday’s match marked the end of preseason play for the Gators. The 2014 campaign officially opens next Friday with a 7 p.m. home match versus Miami (Fla.).

Florida Coach Becky Burleigh Says:

“I was happy with our team defense – they limited Baylor’s opportunities tonight. Also thought the team handled Baylor’s pressure tonight. We knew they were going to be high pressure and we dealt very well with that.”

Earlier Saturday:

Florida and Baylor worked together Saturday morning to sort and stack food items to be used for the Food4Kids Backpack Program.

The program provides area children who are “chronically hungry” and are at risk of not receiving food over the weekend a backpack filled with food items. With elementary schools starting soon, the food items the Gators and the Bears sorted on Saturday will be used by the schools to pack backpacks to send home next weekend.

Where’s Savannah?

The Gators were without sophomore All-American Savannah Jordan Saturday as she was with the U.S. National Team in FIFA Under-20 World Cup quarterfinal play at the National Stadium in Toronto, Canada.

The U.S. and Korea DPR tied 1-1 overtime and Korea DPR advances with a 3-1 penalty kicks advantage.

Preseason Conference Votes:

Florida shared the 2013 Southeastern Conference title with Texas A&M as each team posted 9-2 league records. Baylor tied for fourth in Big 12 Conference action with its 3-4-1 league record.

Florida – The Gators are picked to win the Southeastern Conference.

Baylor – The Bears are picked to finish fourth in Big 12 Conference play in 2014. West Virginia is the preseason pick to win the Big 12.

Florida is ranked No. 8 on the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) poll.

Season Opener:

Soccer is the first Florida team competing this season, as the Gators open the 2014 season on Friday, Aug. 22 when Miami comes to Pressly Stadium for a 7 p.m. match. Florida continues home action on Sunday, Aug. 24 at 1 p.m. against South Florida. That match will be played at the Donald R. Dizney Stadium.
