GAINESVILLE, Fla. – Goals from a quintuplet of Gators gave Florida a 5-2 win over Florida International in exhibition play on a soggy evening Thursday at the James G. Pressly Stadium.

 

Start time for the exhibition was pushed back several times due to inclement weather in the area. The match started nearly two hours late and was played in three periods with minutes of 45-30-20.

 

Five different Gators scored Thursday, with the first coming off a 12-yard shot from sophomore transfer Betsy Middleton to tie the match in the 33rd minute. Junior Brooke Smith put a deflected ball in the 36th minute to give Florida the go-ahead goal. Pamela Begić pushed the UF lead to 3-1 when she put in the loose ball in the box from eight yards in the 41st minute.

 

Florida’s last two goals came in the final period. Senior Jillian Graff picked the ball up off the endline and took it to the goal to give UF a 4-2 lead. Sophomore Brooke Sharp headed in a Brooke Smith corner kick for the Gators’ final goal.

 

The Panthers:

FIU scored first when Madlen Weinhardt put in a 14-yard shot to the far upper slot in the seventh minute. Ellen Crist provided the only goal of the second period with her score in the 73rd minute.

Preseason Conference Votes:

Florida shared the 2013 Southeastern Conference title with Texas A&M as each team posted 9-2 league records. FIU tied for seventh in its first season of Conference USA play.

Florida – The Gators are picked to win the Southeastern Conference.

FIU – The Panthers are picked to finish fourth in Conference USA play in 2013. Charlotte is the preseason pick to win the C-USA.

 

Rankings:

Florida is ranked No. 8 on the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) poll.

 

Season Opener:

Florida will play host to Baylor on Saturday for the final exhibition match for both teams. Match time is set for 7p.m. at Pressly Stadium and admission is free.

 

Soccer is the first Florida team competing this season, as the Gators open the 2014 season on Friday, Aug. 22 when Miami comes to Pressly Stadium for a 7 p.m. match. Florida continues home action on Sunday, Aug. 24 at 1 p.m. against South Florida. That match will be played at the Donald R. Dizney Stadium. Admission is free for all Gator home regular-season action.
