Jaterra Bonds will finally make 'the walk.'

There are 15 University of Florida student-athletes who will participate in this Saturday’s commencement ceremonies in the Stephen C. O’Connell Center, however, only 14 of them will be receiving their degree.

Jaterra Bonds, who wrapped up her Gator eligibility with the women’s basketball team at the end of the 2013-14 season, officially earned her degree in Telecommunications was scheduled to participate in graduation ceremonies on Sat., May 3.

However, she got a phone call. A very important phone call. From Lin Dunn, head coach of the WNBA Indiana Fever. She was inviting Jaterra to the team’s tryouts and needed to be with the Fever as soon as possible.

That meant Jaterra wouldn’t have the opportunity to “walk” with her cap and gown in the O’Connell Center and celebrating her milestone academic achievement.

Jaterra was one of the last players released from the Fever, but playing during the preseason and practicing with a WNBA squad is an experience she says she will cherish forever.

Now, Jaterra has another opportunity. Not with the Fever right now, but to “walk.”

She will do so on Saturday afternoon in front of her family, the majority of whom live in Gainesville so they won’t have far to travel to cheer her on one final time in the O’Connell Center.
