Friday April 13, 2001Georgia Defeats No. 23 Florida Baseball 9-4
Jeremy Brown pitched a 9.0 complete game in leading Georgia to a 9-4 victory Friday against Florida at Foley Field. The loss drops Florida to 25-15 overall and 9-7 in the SEC while Georgia improves to 23-12 overall and 9-7 in the SEC.
The loss snapped Florida’s nine-game SEC win streak and broke a three-game win streak in the series.
Georgia made it 7-3 with to runs in the fourth when Adam Swann led off with a double followed by a Kris Edge single and Andy Neufeld walk to load the bases. Swann scored on a Jody Pollock fielder’s choice and Edge scored on Jeff Keppinger’s sacrifice fly. The Bulldogs made it 9-4 with two more runs in the sixth on a Andy Neufeld walk, RBI double from Jody Pollock and David Coffey’s RBI fielder’s choice.
Florida grabbed an early 3-0 in the first inning on four consecutive doubles by Mark Kiger, Matt Goss, Peter Nystrom and Pat Osborn. Matt Goss hit a solo home run (his sixth of the year) for UF’s fourth run.
Brown pitched a 9.0-inning complete game and scattered nine hits and two walks. He struck out seven batters.
Florida starter Keith Brice (1-2) took the loss after throwing the first 3.0 innings. Kevin Coleman (3.0 innings) and K.O. Wiegandt (2.0 innings) each saw action on the mound for the Gators.
Georgia rallied back to tie the game at 3-3 on a solo Andy Neufeld’s solo home run in the first along with a wild pitch and Kris Edge RBI groundout in the second inning. Georgia took a 5-3 lead in the third on a two-run home run to leftfield by Doc Brooks.
The Gators collected nine hits on the evening. Goss finished 2-4 with two RBI and two runs. Peter Nystrom (RBI) and Pat Osborn (RBI) each finished with two hits apiece.
Game two of the three-game series is tomorrow (2 p.m.) at Foley Field.
