Tuesday July 22, 2014Summer Shots: Gators Coaches Digging Their Down Time

Gainesville, Fla.

GAINESVILLE, Fla. -- The 2014-15 soccer season is three weeks away. The start of the fall academic semester is a week after that. Oh, and, footballs fly in “The Swamp” on Aug. 30.

The Gators sports calendar is about to flip, with it all set to start all over again.

But before all the new seasons commence, we figured we’d sneak a peek at how Gators coaches took advantage of some down time this summer and enjoyed some much-needed R&R.

Note: If you’re wondering where shots are from the likes of Billy Donovan, Kevin O’Sullivan and Gregg Troy, well, some of UF’s coaches are still knee-deep in recruiting season. So when football and soccer coaches are sweating on their respective fields next month, others figure to be sweating on beaches somewhere.

Still basking in the glory of the program's first national championship, Walton took his family for some outdoors fun on a swing through Georgia, North Carolina and Tennessee. Those are the Waltons (above) white water rafting the Nantahala River near Bryson City, N.C. And that's them horseback riding (below) in the Smokies.

Speaking of national championships, gymnastics coach Rhonda Faehn has two in a row. She celebrated with her family by visiting France. That's where her husband, past UF assistant coach men's tennis coach Jeremy Bayon, is from. No, that's not his house in the background. It is, however, Rhonda and Jeremy with their youngest son Isaiah.

UF's women's tennis coach likes to fish. Loves it, actually. One of his favorite get-aways is Cedar Key (which happens to be a popular fishing destination for Walton and Billy D, also). The whopper below looks to me like a grouper, but I wouldn't know a blue marlin from a Miami Marlin. I'd ask Roland to clarify, but he's in Sweden this week visiting family. Clearly, the man knows how to unwind. He knows how to recruit, too. Florida's incoming freshman class is ranked No. 1 in the nation.

The women's basketball coach took her mom Barbara Butler on a special trip to San Pedro, Beliz -- in Central America -- but the below shot is from a trip to her native Tennessee to see her parents. That's dog Pearl along for a wet ride.

Now the second-longest tenured coach on the UF staff, Burleigh was due a sabatical and used her time to visit Slovenia (below). After this photo, she successfully scaled the Julian Alps jagged peak in the background. OK, I'm kidding ... but she likes to kid, too.

Set to enter her 24th season leading the volleyball team, Mary and husband Mark (color analyst for UF men's basketball) highlighted their summer by attending the wedding of son Matt and his bride Katie. The two were married July 5 in Bloomington, Ind. Matt, a former manager for the Gators men's hoops team, is now assistant director of player development at Wyoming. We wish the young couple a lifetime of happiness.

For years, the Gators coach has made the Florida panhandle his beach of choice (Destin area, to be specific). Takes a couple weeks there a year, with time set aside to boat and fish with the fam. Gotta love the Emerald Coast.

Say "hey" to the family of the Gators' women's golf coach. Emily took a trip up to Upper Sandusky, Ohio to hang out. Not sure if she hit the links or not -- that's Emily lower right corner below -- but if so, here's hoping she (and her loved ones) made a bunch of birdies.
