Thursday April 12, 2001Baseball Falls To Stetson 21-17 Despite Comeback
Despite rallying back from a 14-run deficit, No. 7 Stetson handed No. 23 Florida a 21-17 loss Wednesday at McKethan Stadium. The loss breaks Florida’s 14-game win streak as the Gators drop to 25-14 while Stetson improves to 30-5.
Down 17-3 Florida scored nine runs in the seventh and five runs in the eighth to come back to tie the game at 17-17. But Stetson scored four in the top of the ninth as Jeff Christy, Frank Corr and Josh Laws each hit home runs to win by the final four-run margin.
Stetson finished with a season high nine homeruns in the game including three in the ninth inning. Stetson’s Frank Corr finished 5-7 with three RBI and three runs. Corr hit two homeruns in the game including a two-run shot in the ninth.
Down 17-3 Florida tied a school record with nine consecutive hits in the seventh inning. The first seven hits were singles. The eighth hit was an Aaron Sobieraj grand slam and Kevin Estrada followed with a single. All nine hitters scored after reaching base in the inning.
The four hour and four minute game featured a combined 38 runs, 43 hits, 12 pitchers, 10 homeruns, and 19 runners left on base. It was Florida’s longest game of the season.
Stetson took the first lead of the game in the second inning. Andy Wilson led off the inning with a walk and later scored on a bases loaded walk. Stetson went up 2-0 in the fourth inning with a lead off homerun from Vinnie Rinaldi.
Stetson scored three more runs in the fifth inning to go up 5-0. Frank Corr led off the inning with a solo homer. Later in the inning Andy Wilson went deep with a man on for the 5 run lead.
Florida scored five unearned runs in the eighth inning. Stetson third baseman Brain Snyder, who went 3 for 6 with three runs at the plate, made two errors in the inning to lead to the five unearned runs. Pinch hitter David Klebonis knocked in two runs with a double down the right field line to tie the game.
Stetson All-America pitcher Lenny DiNardo pitched the final inning for the Hatters preserving the victory. Roger Lincoln (3-0) earned the win for Stetson. Florida relief pitcher Joey Simon took the loss falling to 5-4.
Florida returns to SEC play this weekend on the road at Georgia. Game times are: Friday 6:30 P.M., Saturday 2 p.m., and Sunday 1:30 p.m. Sunday’s game can be seen on Sunshine Network. All games can be heard on the Gator Radio Network.
