Vernon Hargreaves, III was named to the Jim Thorpe Award Watch List.

University of Florida defensive back Vernon Hargreaves III has been named to the 2014 Jim Thorpe Award Preseason Watch List, announced today by the National College Football Awards Association.

The sophomore from Tampa, Fla. enrolled in the summer and quickly moved up the depth chart, starting the final 10 games of the 2013 season at cornerback. He tied for seventh in the league in interceptions (3). His 11 pass breakups equaled the most by a true freshman in Gator history, and tied for the ninth-most in a single season in program annals. Hargreaves earned Third Team All-America, National Defensive Freshman of the Year, First Team All-Freshman All-America, SEC Newcomer of the Year, First Team All-SEC and Freshman All-SEC honors at the conclusion of his debut season.

The Jim Thorpe Award is given annually to the top defensive back in college football. The preseason watch list is compiled by the Jim Thorpe Award Committee and consists of 30-50 players from around the country. The winner will be announced on Thursday, Dec. 11 at The Home Depot College Football Awards Show on ESPN. A presentation banquet will be held Tuesday, Feb. 3, 2015, in Oklahoma City.

Hargreaves was the only freshman among 15 semifinalists for the Jim Thorpe Award last year. Former Gator cornerback Joe Haden was the last player from UF to be named a finalist after he was selected in 2009. Safety Lawrence Wright was the 1996 recipient and is the only Florida player to win the award.
