Monday April 9, 2001Men's Golf Finishes Tied for Eighth

Puerto Vallarta, Mexico

The fifth-ranked University of Florida men's golf team finished tied for eighth with a score of 881 (+17) in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico, at the 12 team Ford U.S. Collegiate Championships hosted by Kent State University at the Vista Vallarta Golf Club.

Georgia won the tournament with a three round score of 835 (-29). It outdistanced itself from second place Georgia Tech by 33 strokes. Luke Donald of Northwestern took medalists honors with a three round total of 202 (-14).

Florida shot a first round score of 292 (+4) to position itself tied for third place. The second round brought more of the same as UF shot a consistent 294 (+6), but fell to seventh place after two rounds of action. During third round action, Florida shot a 295 (+7) to move back into contention.

Senior Nick Gilliam (Gainesville, Fla./Gainesville H.S.) led the team with a three round total of 218 (+2) to tie for 16th. Freshman Camilo Villegas (Medelin, Colombia/ The Columbus School) shot a 71 ( -1) the final two rounds to total a score of 220 (+4) over the three rounds to finish tied for 22nd, and sophomore Bubba Dickerson (Hilliard, Fla./ West Nassau H.S.) shot a three round total of 222 (+6) to finish tied for 27th. Junior Camilo Benedetti (Medelin, Colombia Instituto Jorge Robledo) shot a 76 (+4) the final round to finish with a three-round total of 227 (+11) and tied for 45th. Junior Ben Banks (England, United Kingdom/ King Edwards School) continued his improvement throughout the tournament with a final round score of 74 (+2) to finish tied for 54th with a total of 231 (+15).

ESPN will televise the U.S. Intercollegiate from Puerto Vallarta, Mexico. The tournament will air on a tape-delayed basis April 14-15 on espn2. The second round will be shown April 14 from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. Final Round action will be shown from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. April 15.

The UF men's golf team will return to action when it travels to Sea Island, Ga., to play in the Southeastern Conference Golf Championship at the Seaside Golf Course April 20-22. UF finished eighth last season.
