Casey Turgeon was a three-year starter for the Gators at second base.

Second baseman Casey Turgeon, a three-year starter for the Gators, has signed with the St. Louis Cardinals and will forgo his final year of eligibility at the University of Florida. He had been taken in the 24th round at No. 735 overall following his junior campaign and has been assigned to the Johnson City (Tenn.) Cardinals, the organizationís affiliate in the Rookie Appalachian League.

 

Turgeon batted .259 this season with a team-high 35 walks and was second on the squad in runs (36), RBI (33), doubles (11) and homers (4). He became the second Gator in school history to be named as the NCBWA National Hitter of the Week on May 6 after batting .727 (8-for-11) in Floridaís first sweep of Alabama in Tuscaloosa since 1988 and was also chosen as the SEC Player of the Week for his efforts against the Crimson Tide.

 

In 2013, he was one of the three Gators to start all 59 games, with 50 starts at second base and nine at shortstop. Turgeon batted leadoff in 23 games, was second in the order 28 times and third on eight occasions. He hit .268 overall with team-highs in runs (41) and walks (31), tied for the team lead with five homers and was second on the squad with nine stolen bases in 11 attempts.

 

As a rookie, Turgeon was named a first-team Freshman All-American by Perfect Game and a second-team Freshman A-A by Baseball America. He started 65 of Floridaís 67 games at second base and batted .281 with 35 runs, 30 RBI, 27 walks, 11 doubles and 10 stolen bases in 13 attempts. In seven NCAA Tournament outings, he registered a .357 (10-for-28) clip and he ranked second on the club with a .364 average in 37 non-conference games.

 

Over his three years wearing the Orange and Blue, Turgeon started 185 games and had a career average of .269, with 112 runs, 95 RBI, 28 doubles, 23 stolen bases and 13 homers.
