Peter Alonso was one of the Gators' two Freshman All-Americans.

Florida designated hitter Peter Alonso and right-hander Logan Shore were named to the 2014 National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) Freshman All-America Team on Monday as second-team selections.


Head coach Kevin OíSullivan now has 11 Freshman All-Americans in his seven-year tenure: Josh Adams (2008), Preston Tucker (2009), Nolan Fontana (2010), Brian Johnson (2010), Austin Maddox (2010), Hudson Randall (2010), Mike Zunino (2010), Karsten Whitson (2011), Casey Turgeon (2012), Alonso (2014) and Shore (2014).


A member of the SEC All-Freshman Team, Alonso batted .264 with 32 RBI, 19 walks, 18 runs, six doubles, four homers and two triples in 60 games. The Tampa native started 58 games for the Gators, 30 as the designated hitter, 24 at first base and four at third base. Alonso hit .290 in SEC play, was second on the club with 23 RBI and all four of his round-trippers this year came in league action.


The SEC Freshman of the Year and a third-team All-American from Louisville Slugger, Shore was 7-4 with a team-low 2.16 ERA and led the Orange and Blue with 68 strikeouts in 95.2 innings. A first-team All-SEC selection, the Coon Rapids, Minn., native went 7-1 in league play with a 2.08 ERA, tying for the lead in conference victories.
