GAINESVILLE, Florida - An exceptional incoming freshman class for the University of Florida gymnastics team gains another outstanding member. Alex McMurtry, a seven-time Level 10 Junior Olympic national event champion, signed with the Florida gymnastics team, Gator head coach Rhonda Faehn announced Monday.

Alex McMurtry, winner of the 2013 Nastia Liukin Supergirl Cup senior division all-around, will join the Gators for the 2015 season.

“We are thrilled that Alex has chosen to graduate a year early and join the already talented freshman class this fall. She will make an instant impact everywhere and I believe Alex will become one of the Gator greats. Alex brings explosive power, incredible work ethic and a tremendous competitive fire. Her gymnastics style is similar to Kytra Hunter’s – dynamic and powerful,” Faehn said. “Alex has the talent and desire that will continue the Gators on the path of excellence athletically as well as academically. We welcome Alex and her wonderful family to the Gator Nation.”

McMurtry won the 2014 Senior B Level 10 vault title at the 2014 U.S. Junior Olympic National Championships in Jackson, Miss. She took the 2012 J.O. Junior C all-around and floor exercise titles, won the 2011 Junior A J.O. national crowns in all-around, vault and floor and the 2010 Junior A vault. She is a four-time member of the J.O. Olympic National Team (2013, 2012, 2011, 2010).

She has won multiple Region 7 and Virginia state event titles, including the 2010, 2011, 2012 region all-around.

“Before I even visited UF, I loved watching the team compete and I knew several of the girls. Then I absolutely fell in love with the school on my visit. I loved the coaches and everything about the program,” McMurtry said. “It felt like a great fit for me.”

McMurtry competes for Richmond Olympiad club and is coached by Boris and Larissa Choutkin and Alex Chirika. She attended James River High School and will enroll at Florida this August. She plans to pursue a degree in the medical field.

She is the fourth member of Florida’s 2015 class, joining Kennedy Baker, Ericha Fassbender and Grace McLaughlin who signed in November of 2013.

The Gator gymnastics team is the two-time defending NCAA champions (2013, 2014). Florida returns four All-Americans in 2015.
