Gainesville, Fla.

Florida coach Becky Burleigh announced the signing of Courtney Douglas, who will be joing the Gators in 2014.

GAINESVILLE, Fla. - Head Coach Becky Burleigh announced that defender Courtney Douglas is joining the University of Florida soccer team. Douglas signed a national letter of intent and will be part of the Gators’ 2014 soccer team.

Douglas lives in Brampton, Ontario, but has made several international appearances with Jamaica age-group teams. In January, Douglas appeared with the Jamaica national team at 2014 CONCACAF Women’s Under-20 Championship in the Cayman Islands. Jamaica advanced to the 2014 CONCACAF U-20 Championship after winning Caribbean Football Union (CFU) tournament with a 7-0-1 record. Douglas scored one goal in the course of the CFU tournament. She also was a member of Jamaica’s team at 2012 CONCACAF Women's Under-17 Championship in Guatemala.

She plays for the Erin Mills Soccer Club in Mississauga, Ontario.

“We are excited that Courtney is going to be a Gator. She’s a great player with international experience. Courtney played for Jamaica in the U-20 World Cup qualifying,” Burleigh said. “She will fit right in with our team.”

Douglas joins Jessie Holmes (Los Gatos, Calif.), Cassie Owens (Louisville, Colo.) and Talise Romaine (Chicago, Ill.) as the Gators’ 2014 freshman class.

Florida opens the 2014 season Aug. 22 with a home match versus Miami. In 2013, Florida won a share of the program’s 13th Southeastern Conference title and advanced to the NCAA Second Round.
