Friday May 30, 2014T&F Pushes NCAA Championships Roster to 17 Gators Following Second Day of East Prelims

The Gators added 13 NCAA qualifiers following day two at the NCAA East Preliminary.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- A total of 17 Gators will represent the Orange and Blue at the NCAA Championships in Eugene June 11-14 following the second day of qualifying at the NCAA East Preliminary in Jacksonville -- and the Gators aren’t done yet. Florida returns to Hodges Stadium Saturday for the final day of prelims to finish the mission.

Florida added 13 qualifiers Friday, and now has seven women qualified for NCAAs, and 10 men – including junior jumper Marquis Dendy in both the long jump and triple jump as the top qualifier out of the East Preliminary in both events. Sophomore Robin Reynolds cruised in the 400m quarterfinals Friday to solidify the top spot out of the east in the race with a 51.69 performance.

Reynolds brought with her Ebony Eutsey and Destinee Gause, who notched a PR in the quarterfinals (52.36) of the 400m, while the Gator men also qualified three in the 400m in Hugh Graham, Jr., Arman Hall and Najee Glass. UF also packed a punch in the 800m, advancing three men to Eugene in the event as Sean Obinwa, Andres Arroyo and Ryan Schnulle all qualified on to the finals site. In the 100m, Shayla Sanders and Antwan Wright secured finals berths.

Quarterfinals of the 4x1, 1500m, 110H, 100H, 200m, 4x4 and women’s triple jump will be contested Saturday, along with semis of the 5K for Agata Strausa. The Gators, ranked No. 1 (men) and No. 2 (women) in the country, are aiming for top-12 finishes in each respective event Saturday on the final day of preliminary competition in order to advance to the NCAA Finals site at Historic Hayward Field. Co-SEC Women’s Field Athlete of the Year Ciarra Brewer and triple jumping teammate Gissell Warner are the Gators’ final two field competitors Saturday in the TJ at 5 p.m., while the last evening of running events at the NCAA East Preliminary starts at 6 p.m.

“I thought we did a phenomenal job again today. It was really a good feeling to watch all of our athletes compete today. They really competed with pride and passion – we talk about that a lot here. It was a special day. The good thing is it was wonderful today, but we also have to get back out and finish it tomorrow. The meet isn’t over and we still have qualifying to do. I’m really excited to watch everyone tomorrow. I challenged them to compete with the same intensity they have these previous two days and as we say: Finish The Mission.”
