Marquis Dendy, Fawn Miller, Marija Vucenovic and Stipe Zunic all punched tickets to Eugene Thursday.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- Four Gators punched tickets to Eugene Thursday on the first day of the NCAA Track & Field East Preliminary Round at Hodges Stadium in Jacksonville, and three did so in winning fashion. Juniors Marquis Dendy (long jump) Fawn Miller (javelin) and Stipe Zunic (shot put) each won their respective events and sophomore Marija Vucenovic (javelin) notched a top-12 prelims finish to advance to the 2014 NCAA Championships June 11-14.

Zunic used a 20.60m/67-7 shot put performance to improve his school record and win the NCAA East Preliminary with the second-best mark in the NCAA this year. Likewise, amid scattered showers and a weather delay early Thursday, Dendy leapt a 7.82m/25-8 (+0.8 wind) and Miller used a 57.93m/190-0 heave on her second attempt – and passed on the final three – to be the top qualifiers heading to Eugene from the east region in the long jump and javelin throw, respectively.

The Orange and Blue additionally advanced 16 runners from the first round heats Thursday evening to quarterfinals, as the 100m, 400m and 800m quarterfinals will be contested Friday. UF’s qualifiers in the women’s 1500m will compete in quarters Saturday at UNF’s track. The Gators, ranked No. 1 (men) and No. 2 (women) in the country, are aiming for top-12 finishes in each respective event in Jacksonville in order to advance to the NCAA Finals site at Historic Hayward Field.

Florida men’s hammer throwers David Levin and Kyle Strawn will get the day started for the Gators Friday at 10 a.m., while the remainder of UF’s competitors take to the track and field at 5 p.m.

2014 NCAA East Preliminary Schedule (Jacksonville, Fla.)

“I thought we had a phenomenal day across the board. I challenged everybody last night to come out here, be focused and respond to the level of competition. We talked before and we didn’t do a very good job of that at the conference meet, but I thought we had a phenomenal day today. We came up a little bit short in the women’s long jump and a little short in the hammer – Jayla Bostic had a season-best throw. Other than that, we had a great day. The big thing is, there are still two more days at this meet, we’ve got to go back to the hotel and get rested up. We have to show the same intensity as we showed today. This meet is all about advancing and we have to come back out here tomorrow and advance.”

Brittany Harrell (heptathlon)

Fawn Miller (javelin)

Marija Vucenovic (javelin)

Marquis Dendy (long jump)

Stipe Zunic (shot put)
