Friday May 23, 2014Oyen and Woolcock End Run at NCAA Doubles Championships
Sofie Oyen and Belinda Woolcock bowed out in the round of 16.
The Florida team of Sofie Oyen and Belinda Woolcock concluded its run at the NCAA Division I Women’s Tennis Doubles Championships after its loss on Friday at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex in Athens, Georgia.
The Gator pair dropped a 4-6, 6-4, 6-2 decision to Baylor’s Vitoria Kisialeva and Blair Shankle in the round of 16 and ended Florida’s showing at the NCAA individual championships.
The two teams traded breaks twice in consecutive games during the first set, before the Gators struck again in the 10th game, turning away a pair of game points to win the first set.
Baylor broke to begin the second set and that was the only one of the frame, as the Bears evened the match and forced a third set. The Gators had just one break point during the entire second set, but couldn’t capitalize as Baylor held for the 5-3 lead.
Florida had its chances in the deciding third set, holding three game points in the third game, but lost each of them. The Gators broke right back and tied the frame at 2-all, but Baylor took UF’s next serve and held for the 4-2 advantage. On Woolcock’s serve in the seventh game, the Gators turned away three break points, held a game point, but Baylor forced deuce and came through on its fourth break point before serving out for the win.
Oyen, a senior, ends her collegiate career with a 102-39 doubles record. She became the 16th Gator to win 100 career doubles matches and only the ninth Gator to win 100 singles and 100 doubles matches in a career, as she compiled a 106-37 singles record.
