Olivia Janowicz won the 128th singles match of her career.

Florida’s Olivia Janowicz defeated Santa Clara’s Katie Le in the first round of the NCAA Division I Women’s Tennis Singles Championships that began Wednesday at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex in Athens, Georgia.

 

Janowicz, ranked No. 14, downed the No. 31-rakned Le, 6-0, 6-2, and advanced to the round of 32 where she will play Oklahoma State’s No. 52 Viktoriya Lushkova on Thursday at 10:30 a.m.

 

The Gator senior won the first nine games of the match and never looked back en route to the decisive opening round victory.

 

“I fought really hard for every point and learned from the mistakes I made during the team competition here,” Janowicz shared.

 

Not as fortunate on Wednesday were Gator senior Alexandra Cercone and sophomore Brianna Morgan, who lost their respective first-round matches.

 

Two Gator doubles teams were selected and begin play in the 32-team event on Thursday.

 

The six-round, single-elimination singles event begins Wed., May 21 at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex in Athens, Georgia.

·         NOTE: Florida defeated Oklahoma State in the 2014 NCAA Second Round of the team competition; Janowicz played the No. 2 spot in the Gator’s lineup, while Lushkova was at the No. 1 position so the two did not meet in the dual match.

·         Janowicz is competing in the singles draw for the second time in her career (also in 2011, lost first round)

·         Two Gator tandems earned a spot in the 2014 NCAA Doubles Championships 32-team field that begins Thu., May 22

·         Senior Sofie Oyen teams with freshman Belinda Woolcock

·         Janowicz and Keegan are ranked No. 23.
