Tuesday May 20, 2014Florida Sweeps Halifax Media Group Southeastern Conference All-Sports Titles

Gainesville, Fla.

Florida swept the Halifax Media Group SEC All-Sports standings for the sixth straight year in 2013-14.

GAINESVILLE, Florida Ė A league-high five team titles led the University of Florida athletics program to a sweep of the 2013-14 Halifax Media Group's Southeastern Conference All-Sports titles. It is the 14th time the Gator program has taken each of the three titles Ė overall, men and women. UF is the only school to collect all three titles in a single season.

The determination of the SEC All-Sports standings came after the track & field outdoor championships, the final league sport to award a title in 2013-14.

The overall SEC All-Sports title is the 24th for Florida, while the Gator program also earned its 21st women's and 18th menís titles.

Did You Know?

This is the 24th overall SEC All-Sports trophy for Florida. The Gators won their first in 1987-88.

Florida is the only league program to collect each of the all-sports titles (overall, menís and womenís) in a single season. The 2013-14 is Floridaís 14th SEC All-Sports sweep and the programís sixth straight.

This is the eighth consecutive overall and womenís titles for Florida while the men take their sixth straight.

Floridaís 218 all-time league team titles are the most in the SEC. In the last 10 seasons, UF leads the league with 57 titles.

Floridaís 2013-14 SEC titles:

The Gators led the SEC in 2013-14 with five league team titles:

         Baseball

         Menís Basketball

         Soccer

         Menís swimming & diving

         Womenís indoor track & field

One other Florida sport claimed a league crown in 2014 as the Gator lacrosse team won their fourth consecutive American Lacrosse Conference title.

SEC Athletes of the Year:

Seven Gators picked up SEC Athletes of the Year honors so far in 2013-14. (Menís basketball: Scottie Wilbekin; Menís basketball defensive: Patric Young; Soccer: Savannah Jordan; Menís swimming: Marcin Cieslak; Menís indoor track: Arman Hall; Womenís indoor track: Cory McGee; Volleyball libero: Taylor Unroe)

Florida Athletics Director Jeremy Foley says:

ďWhen competing in the SEC, the teams faced are often among the nationís best. The Southeastern Conference All-Sports Trophy is something we take great pride in due to the passion and effort our coaches and student-athletes displayed during the season.Ē

How is the Halifax Media Group's SEC All-Sports titles figured?

Points are awarded based on the number of competing teams in a sport (e.g. Ė 14 teams compete in SEC baseball, giving the winner 14 points, second gets 13, etc. Four teams compete in equestrian, awarding four points to the winner). A programís points total is divided by the total number of teams competing in the sports the school fields and that quotient ranks the teams in the final Halifax Media Group standings. The sports of cross country, indoor and outdoor track & field are combined. A program's outdoor track finish makes up half, while the remaining two quarters are based on the cross country and indoor finishes.

About the SEC All-Sports Trophy:

This is the third consecutive year the Halifax Media Group, which includes 35 newspapers and affiliated websites throughout the Southeastern United States, has awarded the overall, menís and womenís SEC All-Sport trophies.

The New York Times Regional Newspaper Group gave the awards from the 1994-95 through 2010-11 seasons. Prior to that, the league tabulated the SEC All-Sports totals.

Whatís Next?

UF is hopeful of finishing among the nation's top 10 most successful overall athletic programs for the 31st consecutive year when final national all-sports rankings are released June 26 or 27. Florida is the only school to finish among the nation's top 10 overall most successful athletic programs each year since 1983.
