Friday May 16, 2014Florida to Face Northwestern for Third Time This Season
The Gators will face ALC foe Northwestern for the third time this season when the Wildcats travel to Gainesville for the NCAA quarterfinals on Saturday. Florida won the first two matchups, both one-goal thrillers in Evanston, Ill.
Florida owns a 6-3 advantage in the series, including a 3-0 record in Gainesville. The Gators have never faced an opponent three times in one season, and the Wildcats have only done so once - defeating Penn State in all three meetings last season.
Shannon Gilroy Named Tewaaraton Award Finalist
Junior midfielder Shannon Gilroy has been named a 2014 Tewaaraton Award finalist, as announced by the Tewaaraton Foundation on Thursday. The Tewaaraton Award honors the nation’s top male and female college lacrosse player.
Gilroy leads the nation with 80 goals and ranks third 98 points, in addition to leading Florida with 75 draw controls, 23 caused turnovers and 18 assists. She was named the ALC Tournament MVP, ALC Midfield Player of the Year and was an All-ALC First Team selection. Highlighting the season, Gilroy set or tied three program single-game records in the win over High Point with 10 draw controls and eight goals off of 13 shots. She has set a total of 11 program records this season. Gilroy is Florida’s third Tewaaraton finalist in three years, along with Brittany Dashiell (2012) and Mikey Meagher (2013). She is also the only player from the American Lacrosse Conference to be named a finalist in 2014.
Home Is Where The Heart Is
The Gators have made Donald R. Dizney Stadium a tough place for opponents to play. In five seasons, they have compiled an overall record of 52-4 (.929) record at home and currently boast a 28-game win streak inside the friendly confines of Dizney Stadium.
Gators Ranked High in NCAA Statistics
As the post-season progresses, Shannon Gilroy and Florida continue to rank well in several NCAA statistical categories. In games through May 11, Gilroy leads the nation in goals (83) and goals per game (4.15), while ranking second in points per game (5.15) and third in points (103). Mary-Sean Wilcox ranks 12th in goals against average (8.08), while Cara Canington is 12th with a save percentage of .475.
As a team, Florida ranks second in scoring offense (15.20), fourth in scoring margin (6.95), fifth in draw controls (15.35 per game) and in points (396), 14th in ground balls per game (18.20) and 15th in scoring defense (8.25).
Mollie Stevens Named WomensLax.Com Rookie of the Week
Mollie Stevens was named the WomensLax.com Rookie of the Week (5/12) after scoring a career-high-tying four goals in Florida’s win over Denver. Stevens also tallied three ground balls and a caused turnover as the Gators advanced to the NCAA quarterfinals.
