Saturday May 10, 2014Rematch Between Florida and Denver in Second Round of NCAA Tourney

Gainesville, Fla.

Florida is set for its second rematch in two weeks, this time against Denver in the second round of the NCAA Tournament. The Gators and the Pioneers met under very similar circumstances last year after Denver defeated Jacksonville in the first round of the NCAA Tournament in Gainesville. Florida beat Denver, 16-5, to advance to the quarterfinals for the third consecutive year. This year, Denver once again had to get past Jacksonville to face Florida in the second round. The Gators own a 2-0 advantage over the Pioneers, with both contests taking place in Gainesville.

Familiar Faces on the Field

Several Gators will face former teammates when Florida plays Denver on Sunday. Sammi Burgess and DU’s Sybil Pallace spent four years at McDonogh, leading their team to four undefeated seasons and four IAAM Championships. Caroline FItzgerald played at Mt. Sinai with Denver’s Rachael Dillon, winning the school’s first New York State Championship. Beth Willertz played for two years with the Pioneer’s Hannah Hook at Severn, while Mary-Sean Wilcox played with Sarah Kasun at Notre Dame Prep. Angela Flister and Haley Bordner played for three and two years, respectively, at Century with Denver’s Jill Remenapp, winning a MPSSAA Class 3A/2A state championship in 2010.

She has set a total of 11 program records this season. Gilroy is Florida’s third Tewaaraton finalist in three years, along with Brittany Dashiell (2012) and Mikey Meagher (2013). She is also the only player from the American Lacrosse Conference to be named a finalist in 2014.

Florida Enters NCAA Tournament as No. 4 Seed

The University of Florida lacrosse team enters the 2014 NCAA Championships as the No. 4 seed. The 26-team field was revealed Sunday evening on NCAA.com. Florida (17-2) will host Denver (18-1) and Jacksonville (14-5) in the first and second rounds on May 9 and 11 at Donald R. Dizney Stadium.

The Gators advanced to the NCAA Championships after winning the American Lacrosse Conference Tournament earlier today to take the league’s automatic bid. Florida received a first-round bye and will face the winner of the game between Denver and Jacksonville on May 11.

This will be the fourth-straight year UF will host a portion of the NCAA Tournament. The NCAA Championships’ top six seeds receive first round-byes to automatically advance to the second round.

Home Is Where The Heart Is

The Gators have made Donald R. Dizney Stadium a tough place for opponents to play. In five seasons, they have compiled an overall record of 51-4 (.927) record at home and currently boast a 28-game win streak inside the friendly confines of Dizney Stadium.
