Wednesday May 7, 2014Gators Recognized by NCAA for Academics

Gainesville, Fla.

The program was honored by the NCAA for a second consecutive year.

The Florida women’s basketball team was recognized by the NCAA for an Academic Progress Rate (APR) that ranks in the top 10 percent in the sport.

The Gators are the only Southeastern Conference women’s basketball team to receive this NCAA honor, which they have earned for the second consecutive year.

The Gator men’s basketball and the Gator softball teams also were honored by the NCAA for its APR.

The UF women’s basketball team had five members earn SEC Academic Honor Roll status this season, with Antoinette Bannister, Viktorija Dimaite, January Miller, Carlie Needles and Lily Svete each excelling in the classroom.

Last weekend, Svete, Kayla Lewis and Jaterra Bonds received their respective undergraduate degrees.

What is the APR?

The APR provides a real-time look at a team's academic success each semester by tracking the academic progress of each student-athlete on scholarship.  The APR accounts for eligibility, retention and graduation and provides a measure of each team's academic performance.

Background on APP Public Recognition Announcement:

Each year, the NCAA honors selected Division I sports teams by publicly recognizing their latest multiyear NCAA Division I Academic Progress Rate (APR).  This announcement is part of the overall Division I academic reform effort and is intended to highlight teams that demonstrate a commitment to academic progress and retention of student-athletes by achieving the top APRs within their respective sports.  Specifically, these teams posted multiyear APRs in the top 10 percent of all squads in each sport.

Multiyear APRs for all Division I sports teams, including the teams receiving public recognition, will be announced May 14.
