Team Notes

After a pair of midweek losses, No. 12 Florida (30-15/15-6 SEC) notched its second-straight SEC sweep by handling Missouri at McKethan Stadium by scores of 7-1, 5-0 and 6-5 (10 innings)…The Gators have claimed their last eight league games and sit atop the standings with three series remaining…UF leads No. 18 Alabama (29-15/13-8 SEC) and No. 13 Ole Miss (33-12/13-8 SEC) by two games apiece overall and has a three-game advantage in the East over No. 8 South Carolina (34-11/12-9 SEC)…Florida has already surpassed last season’s win totals overall and in SEC action, as the squad was 29-30 and 14-16 in conference action in 2013…The Gator pitching staff compiled a 1.61 ERA over the three games against the Tigers, with 15 strikeouts over 28 innings….Junior Taylor Gushue was the top performer on the weekend, going 5-for-12 (.417)…He continues to lead the Gators in the “Triple Crown” categories with a .335 batting average, 36 RBI and four homers…Gushue is batting .400 in SEC play with 17 RBI and 13 runs…Freshman Peter Alonso (.281, 21 RBI) was 3-for-8 (.375), highlighted by five RBI in the series opener, and junior Zack Powers (.288, 9 RBI) went 4-for-11 (.364) with four runs…Freshman Ryan Larson delivered the game-winning single with two out in the 10th inning to lift the Gators to a 6-5 and a sweep on Sunday afternoon…Powers (2-for-5) singled up the middle with two down and moved into scoring position with his first stolen base of the season before freshman A.J. Puk was walked intentionally….Larson (2-for-2) stepped to the plate and roped a single into center field that brought Powers across with the winning run…Florida improved to 6-2 in extra-inning games and boosted their record to 12-6 in one-run contests this year…Junior left-hander Bobby Poyner (4-3, 3.48) worked four scoreless innings, scattering two hits, to collect the victory…Sophomore right-hander Aaron Rhodes (5-2, 2.08) threw a one-hit shutout as the Gators clinched the series by blanking Missouri, 5-0, on Saturday afternoon…Rhodes surrendered only a second-inning double to senior Dillon Everett and retired the final 18 Tiger hitters in going the distance…Rhodes’ effort was the first complete game of the season for the Gators, as well as the first complete game and the first complete game shutout for UF since March 30, 2013 (Jonathon Crawford vs. Ole Miss)…It was the fewest hits allowed in a complete game by a Florida pitcher since Jonathon Crawford’s no-hitter against Bethune-Cookman in the NCAA Gainesville Regional on June 1, 2012…Rhodes matched his career high of six strikeouts and the Tigers were 1-for-27 (.037) against him with two walks…His previous career-best outing was a six-inning relief stint at Texas A&M on March 22 and his longest start was 5.1 innings versus Georgia on April 19…Freshman right-hander Logan Shore (5-2, 1.76) carried a shutout into the eighth inning and Alonso went 3-for-4 and had a career-high five RBI as UF claimed the series opener, 7-1, on Friday night…Shore (5-2) permitted five singles during his outing, with five strikeouts, one run and zero walks…The righty improved to 5-1 in league play…Alonso was a homer shy of the cycle after a two-run single in the second, an RBI triple in the sixth and a two-run double in the eighth…Gushue went 2-for-3 and scored twice and Powers also scored a pair of runs…After an eight-game stretch at home, Florida returns to action with a critical three-game series in Tuscaloosa that starts on Friday night…The Gators and Crimson Tide have not met since the 2011 SEC Tournament…Two of Florida’s final three SEC series will be on the road (at Alabama, host Vanderbilt, at Tennessee).

Peter Alonso, Freshman Designated Hitter, 6-2, 225, Tampa, FL

*Kicked off the series with Missouri by going 3-for-4 with a career-high five RBI and was 3-for-8 (.375) in the series

*Had a two-run single in the second, an RBI triple in the sixth and a two-run double in the eighth to finish a homer shy of the cycle

 

Ryan Larson, Freshman Outfielder, 6-0, 185, Orlando, FL

*Came through with a walk-off single with two down in the 10th inning on Sunday afternoon to lift the Gators to a 6-5 win over Missouri

*Had entered the game as a defensive replacement in the seventh inning and made a running catch to end that frame

*Also led off the ninth inning with a single up the middle and finished the contest 2-for-2

 

Zack Powers, Junior First Baseman, 6-3, 205, Seffner, FL

*Went 4-for-11 (.364) in the sweep of Missouri and scored a team-high four runs

*Is currently on a nine-game hitting streak in which he is 11-for-28 (.393) with six runs and four RBI

*Jump-started the Gators’ winning rally on Sunday in the 10th with a two-out single and moved into scoring position with his first stolen base of the year

 

Bobby Poyner, Junior Left-Hander, 6-0, 205, Wellington, FL

*Picked up the victory in the series finale over Missouri with four scoreless innings in which he permitted two hits

*Worked out of a jam in the 10th, when the Tigers had a pair of runners aboard and one down, with an inning-ending 4-6-3 double play

*In a team-high 22 appearances, Poyner is 4-3 with a 3.48 ERA and three saves

 

Aaron Rhodes, Sophomore Right-Hander, 5-11, 190, Venice, FL

*Tossed a one-hit shutout in his third career start as Florida clinched its weekend series against Missouri on Saturday, 5-0

*Rhodes’ effort was the first complete game of the season for the Gators, as well as the first CG and the first CG shutout for UF since March 30, 2013 (Jonathon Crawford vs. Ole Miss)

*Is 5-2 overall with a team-low 1.76 ERA in a team-high 66.1 innings and has totaled 41 strikeouts
