Wednesday April 23, 2014Volleyball Gives Back, Visits Girl's Place in Gainesville

Gainesville, Fla.

Head coach Mary Wise and the Gators spent Tuesday evening at Girl's Place giving back to the community.

In Maddy’s Words: “It was so fun going to Girl’s Place. It’s so great to have a coach who is so well loved in the community and who encourages us to give back. The girls are always so excited to learn about volleyball and it’s so fun for us to interact with them. Sometimes we forget how much we can influence the community, but it’s nice to have reminders to show us that being a Gator means being a part of something bigger than ourselves.”

While the spring portion of the 2014 volleyball campaign is over – including four exhibition matches against FSU, UCF, UNC and the Florida WAVE – the Gator volleyball program is well on its way to closing the books to a successful 2013-14 school year.

With finals on the horizon and graduation slated for next weekend, where 2013-14 senior Chloe Mann will take one final bow as UF’s Caulkins Award Winner given annually to the top UF female student-athlete that encapsulates athletics, academics, leadership & service – the Gators are busy crossing the Ts and dotting the Is before breaking for the summer.

But the Gators aren’t too busy to continue giving back to the Gainesville community – and that’s just what they did Tuesday evening.

Florida head coach Mary Wise and the Gators boarded the bus from the Lemerand Athletic Center Tuesday afternoon and headed toward Girl’s Place in Gainesville, an organization devoted to young girls in the community with the mission to inspire, challenge, nurture and empower girls to grow courageous, strong and self sufficient.

Girl’s Place inspires girls to celebrate themselves – their minds, hearts and physical well being – and therefore offers a variety of sports camps, after school and summer camp programs for girls in the Gainesville community.

As part of Girl’s Place’s spring volleyball program, the Orange and Blue entertained over 240 girls Tuesday with a volleyball clinic and concluded the day with autographs at Girl’s Place.

Girl’s Place is one of a number of different Gainesville organizations where the Gators volunteer their time, both as a team and as part of UF’s Goodwill Gators Program.
