Left-hander Bobby Poyner fired four shutout innings in relief to preserve a UF 3-2 win over UGA in game 1.

Florida freshman third baseman John Sternagel hit his first career homer in the fifth to snap a 2-2 tie and the No. 18 Gators (25-13/10-6 SEC) held on to a 3-2 lead to take game one over Georgia in the series opener between Eastern Division rivals at McKethan Stadium.

Freshman right-hander Logan Shore (4-2) earned the win after scattering a pair of runs on six hits in five innings. Left-hander Bobby Poyner fired four shutout innings of relief for his third save of the year. Poyner allowed two Bulldogs to reach base and struck out a career-best seven. Georgia (21-16-1, 7-8-1 SEC) starter Ryan Lawlor (3-3) took a complete-game loss after holding the Gators to three runs on five hits.

Game two will begin at 7 p.m. and can be seen live on CSS. Sophomore Aaron Rhodes (3-2, 2.63) will face Georgia freshman right-hander Robert Tyler (4-2, 1.56).

Georgia scored the game’s first run in the third on a two-out RBI single off the bat of Hunter Cole. Shore stranded a pair of Bulldogs in the inning after the first two batters reached base. UGA increased its lead to 2-0 with the second two-out RBI single in as many innings, this time with Skyler Weber delivering the big hit. Shore again limited the damage by forcing a ground out to end the inning.

Florida evened the score at 2-2 with a pair of runs in the fourth. Catcher Taylor Gushue started the rally with a lead off double just inside the line in left. Right fielder Braden Mattson followed with a bunt single, moving Gushue to third, and proceeded to steal second. First baseman Peter Alonso scored Gushue with a RBI ground out to the right side and left fielder Justin Shafer scored Mattson with an RBI single to center.

Sternagel led off the fifth with his first homer, giving the Gators the 3-2 lead. Poyner replaced Shore to start the sixth and fired four consecutive scoreless innings in relief. Poyner allowed two runners to reach base and struck out seven of 14 batters.
