Monday April 14, 2014UF Baseball's A.J. Puk Named SEC Freshman of the Week For First Time
Florida left-hander/first baseman A.J. Puk (Cedar Rapids, Iowa.) was chosen as the Southeastern Conference Freshman of the Week on Monday for the first time in his career after helping the Gators to a series victory at No. 4 South Carolina. He became the first recipient from UF since current sophomore Harrison Bader (Bronxville, N.Y.) was recognized on April 15, 2013.
*With the Gators trailing 3-0 in the eighth inning on Saturday and freshman Buddy Reed on first base after a leadoff single, Puk delivered a pinch-hit RBI double into left center.
*Puk later scored on a one-out single by sophomore Richie Martin to bring the visitors within 3-2.
*After the Gators tied the game in the ninth inning on a sacrifice fly by junior Casey Turgeon and the teams played a scoreless 10th, Puk moved from first base to the mound.
*The left-hander earned the win with a perfect 10th, recorded two outs in the 11th, collected one out in the 12th and worked a 1-2-3 13th with two strikeouts after junior Justin Shafer had moved the Orange and Blue in front with a sacrifice fly.
*Started as designated hitter on Sunday and contributed a single during the Gators’ four-run eighth inning that turned a 4-2 deficit into a 6-4 advantage en route to a 6-5 victory.
*In 11 appearances this season, with three starts, Puk is 3-2 with a 3.74 ERA in 21.2 innings, with 27 strikeouts and seven walks.
