The Gators took three SEC weekly accolades after an impressive Florida Relays showing

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- Three Florida track and field athletes earned SEC weekly honors, announced by the league office Tuesday afternoon following an impressive outing at the Gators’ Pepsi Florida Relays last weekend. Just a day after picking up USTFCCCA DI National Men’s Athlete of the week, junior sprinter Dedric Dukes was named the SEC Men’s Runner of the Week, while redshirt freshman Kyra Jefferson garnered Co-Women’s Runner of the Week and junior Kyle Strawn was named the Co-Men’s Field Athlete of the Week.

 

Dukes, Jefferson and Strawn all posted PRs in their respective events at the 2014 Pepsi Florida Relays, Dukes with two PRs and a world-leading individual mark in the 200m (19.97), Jefferson with a new PR and school record in the 200m (22.78) and Strawn with a new PR in the hammer throw (67.49m/221-5), second best in Florida history and in the SEC so far this season. Dukes additionally ran on UF’s world leading 4x4 relay, which became just the fifth in collegiate history to go sub-three minutes at 2:59.73.

 

The Orange and Blue will be back on the track April 19 when they play host to the Tom Jones Memorial Invitational at Percy Beard Track in Gainesville.

 

DEDRIC DUKES FLORIDA RELAYS RESULTS & HIGHLIGHTS

200m | 19.97 (-0.6) | 1st

4x400m relay | 2:59.73 | 1st

4x100m relay | 38.55 | 2nd (top collegiate relay)

100m | 10.27 (-1.8) | 7th (third collegian)

·         The USTFCCCA Division I National Men’s Athlete of the Week

·         Dukes’ 200m and the Gators’ 4x4 relay marks are the fastest in the world this year. Dukes’ 19.97 in the 200m ties him for the ninth-best performance in collegiate history, as he became one of 12 collegians ever to break the 20-second barrier with a wind-legal mark

·         Florida’s 4x4 relay, composed of Najee Glass, Hugh Graham, Jr., Dukes and Gino Hall posted a 2:59.73 to take top honors against a field of decorated elite and Olympic athletes with the second-best performance in collegiate history and a new Florida record. The quartet joined an elite group of four other relays to ever break three minutes in collegiate history WATCH: Highlights of UF’s 4x4 school record & world leading performance

·         Florida’s 4x1 relay – Antwan Wright, Hugh Graham, Jr., Gino Hall and Dukes – put up a 38.55 this weekend, its second-best mark of the season, the Gators’ 38.29 school record from Texas Relays March 29 leads the NCAA and ranks second in the world

·         Dukes moved up to second all-time on Florida’s 200m top-10 list behind just one Gator great in John Capel (19.87) and improved his 100m time to 10.27 from a previous best 10.43, set at the 2013 Pepsi Florida Relays

 

KYRA JEFFERSON FLORIDA RELAYS RESULTS & HIGHLIGHTS

200m | 22.78 (-0.6) | 2nd (top collegian)

4x100m Relay | 43.41 | 2nd (top collegiate relay)

·         Ran the fastest time in the country and SEC last week in the 200m, and is the top collegian in the world in 200m at this point in the season.

·         Her 22.78 was a PR and a new school record for the Gators

·         Was on UF’s 4x1 relay that ran the second-fastest mark in Gator history; time is the collegiate and world-leading standard so far this year outdoors

 

KYLE STRAWN FLORIDA RELAYS RESULTS & HIGHLIGHTS

Hammer Throw | 67.49m/221-5 | 6th (fourth collegian)

·         Put forth the best mark in the hammer thrown in the SEC in the last week of competition, now ranks second in the league so far this season in the event

·         His toss of 67.49m/221-5 was a PR and ranks second all-time in Florida history

·         Ranks eighth overall in the NCAA in the HT, and is fourth in the East Division NCAA standings
