Team Notes

Florida (20-12/7-5 SEC) went 1-3 last week, falling to Florida Atlantic (5-4 in 11 innings) before dropping two of three games at No. 19 Kentucky (1-17, 11-10, 8-9)…The Gators are tied for first place in the SEC’s Eastern Division with No. 3 South Carolina (26-5/7-5 SEC) and are tied for second overall, one game behind No. 21 Alabama (22-9/8-4 SEC)…UF continues its season-high, eight-game road trip this week by heading to No. 2 Florida State (26-5/13-2 ACC) on Tuesday and will travel to third-ranked South Carolina for a weekend series in Columbia…Sophomore shortstop Richie Martin (.308, 25 R, 16 RBI) batted .600 (6-for-10) in Lexington with three-hit efforts both Saturday and Sunday, while freshman third baseman John Sternagel (.350, 8 R, 8 RBI) continued to swing a hot stick by going 5-for-9 (.556)…Since taking over the starting duties on the hot corner, he is 10-for-25 (.400) with eight RBI, four walks and three runs over the past eight games…Freshman designated hitter Peter Alonso (.274, 12 RBI, 10 R) was 7-for-12 (.538) at Kentucky and clubbed a three-run homer in the eighth inning of the finale that brought UF within one run in the 9-8 setback…The Gator offense had a .324 (36-for-111) clip in the series with the Wildcats, with seven walks, four sacrifice flies, three doubles and three homers…However, the hosts batted .410 (50-for-122) and enjoyed a 36-20 scoring advantage…Freshman right-hander Logan Shore (3-1, 1.15) evened the series on Saturday with a seven scoreless innings in which UK was 3-for-23 (.130) against him…He has now worked five innings or more in all seven of his starts this year and improved to 3-0 in SEC play with a 1.67 ERA…Shore has posted wins over Arkansas (6.1 IP, 7 H, 1 R, 5 K, 2 BB), No. 4 LSU (8.2 IP, 6 H, 2 R, 5 K, 1 BB) and No. 19 Kentucky (7.0 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 3 K, 3 BB)…Junior catcher Taylor Gushue (.328, 28 RBI, 19 R) matched his career best with four RBI and Sternagel tallied a career-high four hits to help the Orange and Blue square the series with an 11-10 victory in game two…Freshman left-hander A.J. Puk (2-2, 4.50) picked up his first career save after recording two outs in the ninth…Alonso was a bright spot in the opener by going 3-for-4 and freshman OF Buddy Reed chipped in with an RBI double…Freshman RHP Frank Rubio worked a career-high four innings to complete the contest…Florida is 13-2 (.867) when scoring first this season and 7-10 (.412) when opponents do…Nineteen of the Gators’ 32 games have been decided by two runs or less this spring…UF is 8-5 (.615) in 1-run games and 4-2 (.667) in 2-run affairs…The Gators are 7-4 (.636) against top-25 competition this season, with a perfect 4-0 mark against top-five clubs.

Peter Alonso, Freshman Designated Hitter, 6-2, 225, Tampa, FL

*Turned in a .438 (7-for-16) average over the Gators’ four games

*Came through with a .538 (7-for-13) clip in the series at No. 19 Kentucky, with three multiple-hit games

*Was 2-for-4 with a three-run homer in the eighth on Sunday that brought UF within 9-8 with the five-run inning

*Went 2-for-5 and scored a run in Saturday’s triumph

*Delivered a 3-for-4 outing in the series opener, with singles in the third, fifth and ninth innings


Richie Martin, Sophomore Shortstop, 6-0, 185, Brandon, FL

*Hit .429 (6-for-14) last week and was a sizzling 6-for-10 (.600) at No. 19 Kentucky with a slugging percentage of .700 and an on-base percentage of .615

*Martin went 3-for-5 in the finale with three RBI, a two-run double with two down in the third inning that opened the scoring and an RBI single in the fifth that gave the visitors a 3-2 advantage

*Was a perfect 3-for-3 and scored a run in Saturday’s 11-10 Gator triumph


Logan Shore, Freshman Right-Hander, 6-1, 210, Coon Rapids, MN

*Held the league’s top offense scoreless over 7.0 innings on Saturday as the Gators evened their series at No. 19 Kentucky

*The Wildcats had taken the series opener on Friday, 17-1, after collecting 20 hits and belting four home runs

*Shore allowed just a double in the third and singles in the sixth and seventh innings to the Wildcats

*Kentucky hitters were 3-for-23 (.130) against the right-hander, including 0-for-7 with runners on base

*He retired the leadoff batter in all seven innings and left the contest with a 9-0 advantage

*Shore is 3-1 this year with a 1.15 ERA in a team-high 47 innings, with 31 strikeouts and 10 walks and is 3-0 in SEC action with a 1.67 ERA

*Has worked five innings or more in all seven of his starts this season


John Sternagel, Third Baseman, 6-1, 205, Rockledge, FL

*Led the Gator offense with a .462 (6-for-13) batting average last week

*Went 5-for-9 (.556) in the series at No. 19 Kentucky, highlighted by a career-best 4-for-5 performance the Gators’ victory on Saturday

*Singled as part of a five-run sixth inning and added a key RBI single in the ninth inning in Florida’s 11-10 win over the Wildcats

*Since taking over the starting duties at third base, Sternagel is hitting a team-high .400 (10-for-25) with eight RBI, four walks and three runs over the past eight games
