Sunday April 6, 2014Gators Wrap Up Spring At Old Waverly Collegiate Championship

West Point, Miss.

Victor Tarnstrom and John Handrigan

Florida will make their furthest trip since the fall to wrap up the 2014 spring golf season at the Old Waverly Collegiate Championship from Apr. 7 – 8 in east Mississippi.

The Gators will take on the Old Waverly course for the first time since 1991 where Florida shot an 860 to bring home an SEC Championship. The conference victory was the first of four consecutive titles that stretched from 1991 to 1994, adding to the Gators’ current total of 15.

In last year’s inaugural tournament at Old Waverly, Mississippi State took the crown after a sudden-death playoff where the Bulldogs finished 3-over with a final team score of 867.

Coming off a 14th place finish at the Floridian, the Gators will look for consistent play from their five-man lineup to end the season on a solid note. All five golfers competing this week own the five best scoring averages on the team.

Course Information: The Old Waverly Golf Club is a par-72, 7,088 yard course.

Tournament Information: The tournament will run from Monday, Apr. 7 to Tuesday, Apr. 8 and is hosted by Mississippi State.

Format: 54-hole event where teams will play 36 holes on Monday and the final 18 on Tuesday.

Tee Times:

Monday – 8:30 a.m. shotgun start

Tuesday – 9 a.m. shotgun start

The Lineup:

·         Junior J.D. Tomlinson (Gainesville, Fla.) collected his fourth top-10 finish of the season at the Valspar Invitational at the Floridian after shooting rounds of 68-67-74 (209) to end play in a tie for sixth place. Tomlinson currently holds the best scoring average on the team (72.52) as he looks to continue his efficiency to close out spring.

·         Junior Eric Banks (Truro, Canada) is the recent recipient of the 2014 David Toms Award for overcoming adversity, appearing live on the Golf Channel’s Morning Drive last week to accept his accolades. The junior matched his season-low round of 68 in the Gators last tournament, shooting a 219 in Palm City.

·         Freshman Ryan Orr (Belleair, Fla) will finish off the regular season having competed in every event this year for the Orange and Blue. Orr couldn’t find a groove at the Floridian, shooting a 231, but will look to bounce back in this week’s tournament.

·         Sophomore Richard Donegan (Okeechobee, Fla.) had his best outing as a Gator at the Floridian, firing rounds of 69-69-72 (210) to earn his first top-10 finish of the year. The transfer brought his scoring average down to 74.89 with his performance, as he looks to carry over his play to Old Waverly this week.

·         Freshman Victor Tarnstrom (Nykvarn, Sweden) will appear in his fourth tournament of the spring after missing action in Palm City two weeks ago. Tarnstrom has struggled some this spring, shooting a low-round 72 at the USF Invitational in March as he focuses on ending the semester with a strong showing.

Buddy’s Bite: “Old Waverly is an excellent course. We won the SEC here in 1991 and I haven't been back, but I remember it as a great test of golf and obviously have fond memories. It is a solid field and there is no reason why we can't be very competitive this week.”

Eyeing the Competition: Florida will take on just one SEC foe as Ole Miss is set to participate this week and for the first time all season the Gators will face no opponent ranked in the top-25 in the Golf World/Nike Golf Division I Coaches’ Poll. Only one team in the field, Memphis, is ranked inside the top-50 according to GolfStat (No. 37).
