Stefani Stojic won her seventh consecutive singles match

Seventh-ranked Florida won the doubles point and then was the beneficiary of a retirement before receiving a pair of straight-set singles victories en route to a 4-0 win against Mississippi State at the A.J. Pitts Tennis Centre Friday night.

The Gators captured the doubles point for the 12th time this season and then raced out to win the first set on four of the six singles courts. One of the matches where Florida didn’t claim the opening set was on court three, where senior Sofie Oyen led 5-1 before her opponent retired. That decision gave Florida a 2-0 lead in the dual match.

Freshmen Kourtney Keegan and Stefani Stojic then came through with wins on courts five and six, respectively, and helped Florida collect the sweep.

Men First

·         The start of the match was delayed 45 minutes because the Gator men and Bulldog men played prior to the women’s match and began late.

Numbers of Note

·         Kourtney Keegan earned her 27th overall singles win, the second-most on the team; she improved to 12-4 in dual matches, including 5-1 in SEC matches.

·         Stefani Stojic provided the clinching dual match win, polishing off Rosalinda Calderson, 6-4, 6-3

·         Stojic’s win was her seventh consecutive singles victory, tying Brianna Morgan for the longest active singles win streak on the team.

Double Up

·         UF won the doubles point for the 12th time this year.

·         Freshman Kourtney Keegan paired with senior Olivia Janowicz and won her team-leading 30th doubles match of the season.

·         Janowicz and Keegan improved to 12-2 as a tandem.

·         Sofie Oyen and Belinda Woolcock earned the first individual win of the dual match and moved to 10-5 as a team.

Retiring Wins

·         For the second consecutive match, Florida earned its first singles win via retirement.

·         Sofie Oyen led Timea Guibe, 5-1, before the Lady Bulldog retired.

·         In UF’s win against LSU, Brianna Morgan got the win on court one after leading 4-3 when her opponent retired.

Quoting UF Head Coach Roland Thornqvist:

·         “This was the best match we’ve had with Mississippi State in years. It was fabulous competition from start to finish of the match. The freshmen stole the show tonight. In doubles, they helped set the tone on courts 1 and 2 and were equally superb in singles play. I was happy to see that Stefani (Stojic) was able to finish her match and clinch it for us. She’s been playing well but hasn’t been able to complete a match because the dual match outcome gets determined before she has a chance to see her match through to its end.”
