Team Notes

Florida (19-9/6-3 SEC) enjoyed a perfect 4-0 week, downing No. 1 Florida State (4-1) before sweeping No. 4 LSU (2-1, 6-2, 11-7) at McKethan Stadium…The Gators have taken 13 of their last 16 games and are tied on top of the SEC standings through three league series…UF used a pair of four-run outbursts and drew a season-high 10 walks to complete a sweep of the Tigers, 11-7, on Sunday afternoon…It was the Gators’ fourth regular-season sweep of the Bayou Bengals in school history (1996, 2010, 2011, 2014) and head coach Kevin O’Sullivan’s club sports a four-game winning streak…The Gator pitching staff compiled a 2.33 ERA over the three games, with 12 strikeouts and four walks…Freshman third baseman John Sternagel was the squad’s top hitter with a .333 (3-for-9) clip and established a career best with three RBI in the finale, while sophomore shortstop Richie Martin went 3-for-11 (.273) and junior outfielder/right-hander Justin Shafer was 3-for-6 (.500) and scored four runs…UF did not commit an error in the series until the ninth inning of game three…The Gator bullpen improved to14-2 with 12 saves and a 2.39 ERA and now has 114 strikeouts in 132 innings…Freshman left-hander Kirby Snead (1-0, 1.80), who had pitched 5.1 innings all season, earned his first collegiate victory on Sunday by tossing 4.2 scoreless innings in which he permitted two singles…He was supported by an opportunistic offense that included a career-high three RBI by Sternagel (.296, 5 RBI) and two-RBI performances by freshman Peter Alonso (.244, 9 RBI), junior Mike Fahrman (pinch-hit two-run single) and Martin (.293, 12 RBI)…UF overcame three different deficits and sophomore Harrison Bader also launched his first homer of the campaign…Freshman right-hander Logan Shore (2-1, 1.35) carried a shutout into the eighth inning as Florida completed a doubleheader sweep of No. 4 LSU with a 6-2 win on Saturday night…UF scored three times in the fifth and sixth innings…With the Gators up 3-0, junior catcher Taylor Gushue (.327, 22 RBI) increased the margin to six runs with a towering three-run homer in the sixth...By taking both ends of the double-dip, the Orange and Blue notched its first series victory over the Tigers since 2011…Shore (8.2 IP, 6 H, 2 R) was within one out of a complete game before junior Bobby Poyner (3-2, 2.35) recorded the game’s final out to collect his second save…Shafer (2-for-3) belted a walk-off homer with two down in the ninth inning to lift UF to a 2-1 victory on Saturday afternoon in the opener of the doubleheader…Shafer’s game-ending round-tripper, his first big fly of the season, landed in the left-field bleachers and came off of LSU junior right-hander Aaron Nola (5-1)…Shafer’s heroics represented the first walk-off homer for the Gators since Ben McMahan connected against Georgia on May 15, 2010... Sophomore right-hander Aaron Rhodes (3-1, 1.88) earned the victory after setting down both batters he faced in the ninth inning…Trailing 1-0, the Gators countered with a two-out solo shot by junior Casey Turgeon (.276, 15 RBI) in the third, marking just the second run surrendered by Nola this season…The homer was Turgeon’s second of the year, first since March 12 against Illinois State….Making his first series-opening start, sophomore Eric Hanhold (3-2, 2.70) scattered seven hits over a career-high 7.1 innings and tied his career-best of three strikeouts…Florida defeated No. 1 Florida State, 4-1, on March 25 in front of 10,125 fans at The Baseball Grounds of Jacksonville to secure the teams’ regular-season series…The Gators had upended the top-ranked Seminoles, 3-1, in Gainesville on March 18 and will visit Tallahassee on April 8…In his first start of the season, Shafer fired four shutout innings, giving up two hits, with three strikeouts and a pair of walks…Sophomore southpaw Danny Young (3-0, 1.99) threw 3.2 scoreless frames and totaled four strikeouts to collect the victory, while junior right-hander Ryan Harris (1-0, 1.02) recorded the final four outs to collect his team-leading fourth save…The Seminoles avoided their first shutout loss to the Gators since March 3, 1994, with a leadoff homer in the ninth by junior Jose Brizuela… Junior Braden Mattson (2-for-4) opened the scoring with a bases-loaded single in the first inning…The Gators added two more runs in the sixth to build a 3-0 advantage...Mattson legged out an infield hit, went to second on a wild pitch and scored when Shafer’s bunt was thrown away...Junior Zack Powers had a sacrifice bunt that advanced Shafer to third and Sternagel (1-for-3, two RBI) delivered a fielder’s choice to drive in Shafer with the third run…Sternagel provided UF with a 4-0 lead in the eighth by roping an RBI single up the middle that plated Shafer…Florida will host Florida Atlantic (15-12/4-8 C-USA) on Tuesday night before heading to Lexington for a weekend series at Eastern Division rival No. 20 Kentucky (19-9/4-5 SEC).

*The right-hander yielded six hits, five singles and one double, with five strikeouts and one walk

*Is 2-1 this year with a 1.35 ERA in a team-high 40 innings, with 28 strikeouts and 7 walks and is 2-0 in SEC action with a 2.25 ERA

*Has worked five innings or more in all six of his starts this season

*Picked up his first collegiate victory with 4.2 innings of shutout ball in the finale with No. 4 LSU

*Had entered the contest with 5.1 innings on the season spanning 12 appearances

*Permitted only two singles to the Tigers and had a stretch of nine-straight batters retired at one point

*Is 1-0 this year with a 1.80 ERA

 

John Sternagel, Freshman Third Baseman, 6-1, 205, Rockledge, FL

*Led the Gator offense with a .333 (4-for-12) batting average in wins last week over No. 1 Florida State and a series sweep of No. 4 LSU

*Went a team-best 3-for-9 (.333) while starting all three games at third base against the Tigers and boasting a perfect fielding percentage

*Drove in the first two runs of his collegiate career as UF clinched its regular-season series with the Seminoles; had a fielder’s choice in the sixth inning and a run-scoring single in the eighth
