The No. 4/5 Gators return to Donald R. Dizney Stadium on Sunday at 12 p.m. to host the No. 11/12 Penn State Nittany Lions. Florida and Penn State currently sit atop the American Lacrosse Conference standings, with both teams boasting 2-0 league records. While Florida holds a 4-1 advantage in the series, including a 3-0 record in Gainesville, Penn State won last year’s contest, 16-11. In 2013, the Gators and the Nittany Lions shared the ALC regular season title, along with Northwestern.
Familiar Faces on the Field
Lauren Lea and Alex Puller will face a former teammate with Penn State travels to Gainesville on Sunday. Lea and Puller played at Archbishop Spalding with PSU’s Jane Truffler. In 2013, Puller and Truffler led Archbishop Spalding to the school’s best record, 12-6.
Lacrosse Magazine Named Gilroy in Mid-Season Awards
Lacrosse Magazine named their mid-season award winners and listed Shannon Gilroy as the Tewaaraton Award winner, Most Outstanding Midfielder and a First Team All-American. Through 13 games, Gilroy has scored 73 points off 60 goals and 13 assists, and she leads the nation in goals and points. The junior also leads the Gators in draw controls (57) and caused turnovers (18), while tying for the lead in assists.
In addition to recognizing Gilroy as a mid-season award winner, Lacrosse Magazine considered Sammi Burgess for the Most Outstanding Rookie award. Burgess ranks second on the team in points (35), goals (23) and assists (12). She has also notched 16 ground balls and 13 draw controls so far this season.
Gilroy Picks Up Second ALC Offensive Player of the Week Honor
Shannon Gilroy was named the ALC Offensive Player of the Week (3/25) for the second time this season after her performances in Florida’s wins over Dartmouth and No. 20 Ohio State.
Gilroy recorded 10 goals, nine draw controls, five caused turnovers and three ground balls to lead the No. 4 Gators past Dartmouth, 14-7, and No. 20 Ohio State, 10-9, this week. Gilroy’s most important goal of the week came with 2:41 left in the game against the Buckeyes, as it put the Gators up for the third and final time of the contest. Gilroy also eclipsed her own single-season goal record and has now found the back of the net 53 times this season. Additionally, she is now the Florida single-season free-position goal leader with 22 FPGs.
Home Is Where The Heart Is
The Gators have made Donald R. Dizney Stadium a tough place for opponents to play. In four seasons, they have compiled an overall record of 49-4 (.925) record at home and currently boast a 26-game win streak inside the friendly confines of Dizney Stadium.
Gators Ranked High in NCAA Statistics
As the season progresses, Shannon Gilroy and Florida continue to rank well in several NCAA statistical categories. In games through March 23, Gilroy leads the nation in goals (53), points (65) and goals per game (4.42), while being ranked fifth in points per game (5.42) and holding the single-game record for goals with eight, which the junior notched in the 18-7 win over High Point. Sophomore goalkeeper Mary-Sean Wilcox ranks No. 14 in save percentage (.500) and 17th in goals-against average (7.82).
As a team, Florida ranks first in draw controls (16.75 per game), second in points (248), fourth in scoring offense (16 goals per game), 12th in scoring margin (7.5) and 19th in scoring defense (8.5). Additionally, the Gators lead the American Lacrosse Conference in points, draw controls and scoring offense, while ranking second in ground balls per game (18.5), scoring margin and scoring defense.
