Team Notes

Florida (15-9/3-3 SEC) split its four games last week, knocking off No. 1 Florida State on Tuesday night, 3-1, before dropping two of three games at Western Division rival Texas A&M…The Gators captured the series opener, 5-3, in 11 innings, before the Aggies countered with a pair of one-run victories: 5-4 on Saturday and 4-3 on Sunday in 11 innings…Junior catcher Taylor Gushue (team-leading .349, 18 RBI) went 7-for-11 (.636) in College Station, while junior third baseman Josh Tobias (.262) was 5-for-11 (.455) and junior second baseman Casey Turgeon (.283, 14 RBI) was 5-for-15 (.333)…The Gators batted .314 (37-for-118) in the series with three double-digit hit totals and their bullpen permitted just one run in 16 innings for a 0.56 ERA…On the season, UF’s bullpen is 11-2 with 10 saves and a 2.59 ERA in 118 innings, with 105 strikeouts…Down by a run in the ninth of the series finale, the Gators tied the game at 3-3 on an RBI squeeze bunt single by junior Justin Shafer (.203, 6 RBI)…Although the Gators had the bases full with one down, Aggie sophomore A.J. Minter wiggled out of the jam and junior Cole Lankford delivered a walk-off single with two down in the 11th to secure the series victory…Sophomore right-hander Aaron Rhodes (2-1, 1.93) notched career-highs in innings pitched (6.0) and strikeouts (6) but was saddled with the loss…Junior Braden Mattson (.325, 15 RBI) tied his career high with a 3-for-4 outing and both Gushue and Shafer delivered multiple-hit efforts…Texas A&M jumped out to a 4-0 lead on Saturday and the Gators pulled to within 5-4 in the sixth inning on a two-out, two-run single by sophomore shortstop Richie Martin (.304, 21 runs) but could not move any closer…Sophomore RHP Eric Hanhold (3-2, 3.18) worked the first four innings before freshman RHP Brett Morales (0-1, 6.19) threw four scoreless and hitless frames…Martin (3-for-5), Turgeon (2-for-4) and Gushue (2-for-4) accounted for seven of the club’s 10 hits…Mattson snapped a 3-3 tie in the 11th on Friday with a bases-loaded single and Shafer provided insurance with a run-scoring single in the Gators’ 5-3 triumph…Freshman A.J. Puk (2-2, 5.02) picked up his first career SEC win by retiring the lone batter he faced, with Rhodes working a perfect 11th with two strikeouts to collect his third save…Florida banged out a season-high 16 hits and boasted six different players with two or more hits…Making his first SEC road start, freshman RHP Logan Shore (1-1, 1.15) scattered nine hits and three runs (two earned) over five innings…Sophomore Harrison Bader (.300) snapped a 1-1 tie with an RBI triple in the sixth inning and junior Bobby Poyner (3-2, 2.57) closed the contest with three perfect innings as the Gators downed No. 1 Florida State, 3-1, on Tuesday night in front of a season-high 5,657 fans at McKethan Stadium…It was the Gators’ first triumph over a top-ranked team since a 6-3 decision over the Seminoles on April 10, 2012, in Tallahassee…Rhodes limited the high-powered FSU offense to one run over three innings and totaled four strikeouts to earn the win, Tobias opened the scoring with his first homer of the year in the third and Gushue added an insurance run with a sacrifice fly in the sixth…Although Florida State loaded the bases with none out in the third, sophomore starter Danny Young (2-0, 2.50) kept the game scoreless by retiring sophomore DJ Stewart (foul pop up), redshirt senior Brett Knief (strikeout) and junior John Nogowski (grounder)…Young tossed three scoreless frames, with six hits and two strikeouts…The Gators will meet the top-ranked Seminoles (19-4/7-2 ACC) in the second of three meetings between the Sunshine State rivals on Tuesday night in Jacksonville and will then host No. 6 LSU (20-4-1/3-2-1 SEC) at McKethan Stadium next weekend.

*Led the Gator offense with a .538 (7-for-13) batting average in four games

*Was a team-best .636 (7-for-11) at Texas A&M

*Went 2-for-3 and drew a walk in Sunday’s finale, a 4-3 setback in 11 innings

*Doubled twice in a 2-for-4 performance on Saturday, including an RBI two-bagger in the fifth inning

*Helped the Gators take the opener in College Station by going 3-for-4 with an RBI single in the opening frame

*Had a sixth-inning sacrifice fly as UF downed No. 1 Florida State, 3-1

*Paces Florida’s offense in batting average (.349), RBI (18), doubles (10), sacrifice flies (6) and homers (2)

*Is hitting .500 (11-for-22) through two conference series


Aaron Rhodes, Sophomore Right-Hander, 5-11, 190, Venice, FL

*Rhodes had an eventful week, going 1-1 with a save in three appearances spanning 10 innings

*Earned the win over No. 1 Florida State after limiting the Seminoles to one run on three hits over three innings, with four strikeouts

*Preserved the Gators’ series-opening victory at Texas A&M by retiring the side in order in the 11th with a pair of strikeouts

*Posted career-highs in innings pitched (6.0) and strikeouts (6) in the finale with the Aggies but was the tough-luck loser in 11 innings

*Totaled 12 strikeouts and issued one walk in 10 innings last week

*Is 2-1 on the season with a 1.93 ERA and is tied with junior Ryan Harris for the team lead with three saves
