Wednesday March 28, 2001Softball Loses Bama Series Finale 8-3
The Florida Gator softball team suffered its first Southeastern Conference sweep as No. 4 Alabama won the three-game series finale 8-3 Wednesday afternoon at the Florida Softball Stadium.
The Tide (31-1, 11-1 SEC) scattered 10 hits and capitalized on three UF (26-13, 6-6 SEC) errors, two of which came in the first inning and allowed their first run. The Gators tied it at one a piece in their first. Catcher Emily Marino (Joliet, Ill./Joliet) led off with a double down the left field line, was sacrificed to third base and scored on a wild pitch by UA's Shelley Laird (18-0).
A four-run second inning put the Tide out of reach for UF. UA scored all of its runs with two outs on the board. Right fielder Jackie McClain had a bases-clearing double to send in three of them. The Tide scored once more on senior Renise Landry (West Monroe, La./West Monroe) in the fourth before freshman Amanda Moore (Tuscaloosa, Ala./Hillcrest) came in relief. Moore allowed two runs in the sixth, gave up four hits and struck out two. Landry (12-6) claimed six runs (five earned), two walks and one strikeout over three innings.
UF had a short-lived rally in the fifth. The Gators scored twice on three of their seven hits. Marino picked up an RBI with a base hit to score right fielder Katy Berger (Carmel, Ind./Carmel), who reached on a base hit. Center fielder Amanda Judd (Cornville, Ariz./Mingus Union) singled and came in on a sacrifice fly out from first baseman Ashley Boone (Irvine, Calif./Woodbridge).
The Gators continue competition with the Western Division in a three-game set at Arkansas March 31-April 1. The double header Saturday begins at 1 p.m. EST, and Sunday's game is also at 1 p.m.
